In a move to address concerns about online misinformation during Bangladesh’s upcoming general election, TikTok has pledged comprehensive measures to combat misleading content and platform manipulation.
Representatives from the popular social media platform met with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission headquarters in Dhaka on Wednesday, where they outlined their strategy for maintaining electoral integrity in the digital space.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Ferdous Mottakim, TikTok’s South Asia head of public policy and government relations, emphasized the platform’s commitment to safeguarding the democratic process. “Our goal is to assure the Election Commission that TikTok will not allow any disruption to the electoral process,” Mottakim stated.
The platform’s representatives detailed how a multinational team of experts has already begun implementing enhanced monitoring protocols specifically designed for the election period, which is expected to take place in February 2025.
During the discussions, TikTok highlighted its existing content moderation infrastructure and outlined policies specifically aimed at curbing electoral misinformation. The company revealed that approximately 16.3 million videos were removed from Bangladesh in the second quarter of 2024 alone, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to content integrity.
The meeting brought together four election commissioners and senior officials from the commission, who engaged with a delegation of nine TikTok representatives. Both parties acknowledged that maintaining online integrity during elections requires collaborative efforts between electoral authorities, media organizations, and technology platforms.
TikTok’s proactive engagement with Bangladesh’s Election Commission comes amid growing global concerns about the role of social media in elections. Digital platforms have faced increasing scrutiny for their potential influence on democratic processes worldwide, with misinformation and algorithmic amplification of divisive content being particular points of concern.
Bangladesh, with its rapidly growing internet user base and increasing social media penetration, faces similar challenges to other democracies in managing online content during sensitive political periods. TikTok’s popularity has surged in the country in recent years, especially among younger demographics who increasingly consume political information through social media channels.
The Election Commission also confirmed that a workshop was conducted in Dhaka the same day, focusing on promoting accurate online election information and developing strategies to combat misinformation. The session emphasized creating a safe and information-driven digital environment ahead of the national elections.
This initiative reflects a growing awareness among both government institutions and technology companies about the need for proactive measures to protect electoral integrity in the digital age.
For TikTok, the commitment comes as part of broader efforts to address regulatory concerns in various markets. The platform has faced scrutiny in multiple countries regarding content moderation practices and data security issues. By demonstrating a willingness to cooperate with electoral authorities, the company appears to be working to establish itself as a responsible actor in Bangladesh’s digital ecosystem.
As the election approaches, the effectiveness of these measures will likely be closely monitored by electoral officials, civil society organizations, and the Bangladeshi public, who all have a stake in ensuring that social media platforms contribute positively to the democratic process rather than undermining it.
