Disinformation Campaign Threatens Climate Action and Global Security, Military Experts Warn
A sophisticated global disinformation operation undermining climate action poses a critical threat to national security and human survival, according to a new analysis by distinguished military and defense leaders.
The Australian Security Leaders Climate Group (ASLCG), led by former Australian Chief of Defence Admiral Chris Barrie, released a report detailing how well-funded campaigns are waging an information war against climate initiatives worldwide.
Unlike traditional military conflicts, this battle is being fought through coordinated propaganda networks across digital platforms and traditional media. According to the report, anti-climate action campaigns have evolved into “multi-billion dollar permanent operations” with global expenditures reaching approximately $7 billion annually.
“Power in this digitally networked age comes from dominance in the information space,” the report states. “We are now living in a world increasingly shaped by propaganda and disinformation rather than factual information.”
Security experts characterize these efforts through an “information warfare” lens, combining media influence, coordinated online activity, and algorithmic amplification to shape public narratives at scale.
The ASLCG has consistently positioned global heating as the most significant security threat both nationally and globally, arguing that conventional military thinking fails to grasp the scale and immediacy of climate dangers. As a result, many defense establishments remain trapped in outdated 20th-century conflict models while more universal threats escalate.
Beyond merely disrupting climate response, the campaigns actively seek to undermine democratic institutions. “The overall objective is not simply to convince, but to degrade the information environment itself, creating confusion, mistrust and institutional delegitimisation that weaken democratic decision making on complex issues including climate and energy,” the report emphasizes.
The strategic approach involves controlling online content production and dissemination through think tanks, PR companies, social media domination, broadcast networks, high-profile influencers, and automated bots. These narratives deliberately blend anti-climate sentiment with other divisive themes targeting immigration, journalism, racial equality, LGBTQI communities, science, and government.
Climate change already claims millions of lives annually worldwide, according to World Health Organization figures. These fatalities result from floods, fires, famines, heat waves, and storms—numbers expected to rise dramatically as global temperatures increase. Additional millions die from related petrochemical impacts through plastics, pesticides, air and water pollution, and toxic chemicals.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Gebreyesus has stated plainly: “The continued expansion of the use of fossil fuels is a death sentence to millions. There is no excuse for persistent delay in climate action.”
The impact on government policy has been evident. Prior to the Trump administration, the U.S. defense establishment released several reports identifying global heating as a major security threat. Such warnings have since disappeared, with Pentagon officials reportedly prohibited from mentioning climate issues or conducting climate research.
The ASLCG report comes as several countries with significant fossil fuel interests—including the United States, Russia, Saudi Arabia, China, Australia, and Canada—face criticism for inadequate climate action despite escalating global temperatures and extreme weather events.
The security group recommends stronger anti-trust laws and stricter regulation of AI and social media platforms. However, they acknowledge these national-level measures would require global cooperation to be truly effective—a significant challenge with 197 nations involved.
The report concludes that the disinformation campaign represents an existential threat not just to climate initiatives but to rational decision-making across all sectors. Some experts suggest more drastic measures, such as establishing a World Truth Commission to expose misinformation and creating integrity rating systems for media sources.
With climate deaths accelerating and scientific consensus warning of potential civilizational collapse if emissions continue unabated, the report frames the fossil fuel industry’s disinformation campaign as an unprecedented threat to global stability and human survival requiring immediate, coordinated international response.
