Indian officials have reassured the public that fuel supplies are secure amid a surge in panic buying triggered by social media rumors of shortages. Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy emphatically stated Wednesday that the state has ample fuel stocks to meet current demand and urged citizens not to fall prey to baseless claims circulating online.

“These rumors are completely unfounded,” Reddy said during a press briefing in Hyderabad. “We have significantly increased fuel distribution across the state and are fully equipped to maintain uninterrupted supply to all regions.”

According to official figures released by the ministry, authorities have substantially boosted fuel distribution in response to the sudden spike in demand. Diesel supply has been increased by 210 percent above normal levels, while petrol distribution has risen by 132 percent. The government is currently supplying approximately 36,404 kiloliters of combined fuel daily—representing a 175 percent increase over typical distribution volumes.

The crisis appears to be largely manufactured through misinformation campaigns on various social media platforms, which have created unnecessary public anxiety. This digital panic has manifested in long queues at fuel stations across the state, despite there being no actual shortage in the supply chain.

To address public concerns and maintain order, the state government has established a dedicated control room to monitor fuel distribution in real-time. Officials have also activated a toll-free helpline number, 1967, where citizens can report problems or register complaints related to fuel availability.

“We are taking this situation very seriously even though it stems from unfounded rumors,” a senior petroleum ministry official told reporters on condition of anonymity. “The control room is operating around the clock to ensure equitable distribution and prevent hoarding.”

The agriculture sector, a critical component of the state’s economy, has been given special consideration in the government’s response plan. Minister Reddy emphasized that adequate diesel supplies are being prioritized for farmers to prevent any disruption to agricultural operations, particularly important during the current growing season.

Heightened vigilance has been implemented at inter-state borders to facilitate the smooth movement of fuel tankers and prevent any potential disruptions to the supply chain. State police and transportation officials are coordinating to expedite fuel deliveries and minimize delays.

Energy analysts note that such panic-buying situations often become self-fulfilling prophecies, where unfounded fears of shortages lead to behaviors that create temporary supply constraints. This phenomenon has been observed in various regions globally, particularly during natural disasters or political instability.

“What we’re seeing is a classic case of demand shock caused by information cascade,” explained Dr. Ramesh Kumar, an energy economics professor at a local university. “When people hear rumors of shortages, they rush to fill their tanks, creating artificial demand spikes that temporarily strain the distribution system.”

Industry representatives have confirmed that the underlying supply infrastructure remains robust, with refineries operating at normal capacity and no disruption to the fuel import supply chain.

The government has also warned against hoarding and price gouging, stating that strict action would be taken against any retail outlets found engaging in such practices. Spot inspections are being conducted at various fuel stations to ensure compliance with price regulations and supply norms.

As the situation stabilizes, officials expect fuel consumption patterns to return to normal levels in the coming days, provided the spread of misinformation can be effectively countered with accurate information about the actual supply situation.
