Nigerian Technology Expert Launches AI Tool to Combat Political Misinformation Ahead of 2027 Election
A Nigerian technology expert has unveiled an artificial intelligence application designed to counter the spread of misinformation surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s potential re-election bid in 2027, marking a significant advancement in the country’s approach to information integrity in the political sphere.
Gunu Usman, founder of LYT24 Technologies, launched “BAT-BOT AI” on Wednesday in Abuja, establishing multiple access points across digital platforms including WhatsApp, Twitter (X), Telegram, and a dedicated website. The application’s name references President Tinubu’s initials and represents what Usman describes as a “sovereign AI-powered civic information and fact-verification platform.”
“Its objective is to ensure that facts travel faster than falsehood,” Usman explained during the launch event, highlighting the growing challenge posed by digital misinformation in Nigeria’s political landscape.
The timing of this launch reflects increasing concerns about information manipulation in Nigerian politics. With more than 100 million Nigerians now accessing information via smartphones, the digital realm has become the primary battleground for political narratives, potentially shaping electoral outcomes more powerfully than traditional campaign methods.
According to Usman, Nigeria currently faces a “coordinated digital siege” characterized by fake news that undermines public confidence in electoral processes, economic reforms, and security initiatives. This problem extends to Nigerian diaspora communities, who are often exposed to unfiltered misinformation that fuels distrust in national institutions.
The BAT-BOT AI system has been designed with multiple verification capabilities. It can detect repurposed old media, identify manipulated visuals, flag misleading content or AI-generated deepfakes, and provide evidence-based clarifications. These features aim to address what Usman describes as “misinformation, disinformation, deepfakes, hate speech, and manipulated narratives targeting the administration, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and national institutions.”
In a notable feature designed to improve accessibility, the platform operates in multiple Nigerian languages. Users can interact with the system in English, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and Nigerian Pidgin, addressing potential literacy and language barriers that might otherwise limit public engagement.
The system aligns with President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” focusing on transparency and democratic engagement in the digital sphere. Users can verify claims, query government policies, and access information about national development initiatives through various interaction methods.
This development comes as political technology increasingly shapes electoral processes globally. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation and largest economy, has experienced significant challenges with misinformation during previous election cycles, with social media platforms often serving as vectors for false or misleading information.
Political analysts note that such AI-powered verification tools represent an emerging trend in democratic infrastructure worldwide, though questions about implementation, bias prevention, and public trust in such systems remain. The effectiveness of BAT-BOT AI will likely depend on factors including its technical accuracy, perceived independence, and public awareness of its availability.
The platform is currently functional through WhatsApp AI Chat Interface (07055555329), X/Twitter (@Bat_botAi), Telegram AI Bot (@BolaAhmedTinubuBatBot), and a web interface at BatBot.ng, providing multiple entry points for citizens seeking verified information.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 electoral cycle, this technology initiative represents a novel approach to strengthening information integrity in a digital age where, as Usman puts it, “elections are increasingly won or lost in the digital arena.”

Combating misinformation is a noble goal, but the execution will be critical. I hope the developers of this app uphold the highest standards of ethics and accuracy in their work.
This is an important initiative, but I wonder about its long-term sustainability and scalability. Maintaining an AI-powered fact-checking platform requires significant resources and ongoing refinement.
While AI can be a powerful tool, I have some concerns about potential bias or overreach. It will be crucial to ensure this platform maintains objectivity and doesn’t become a partisan mouthpiece.
That’s a fair point. Transparency and independent oversight will be key to building trust in the app’s integrity and neutrality.
Kudos to the tech expert for taking on this challenge. Misinformation is a major threat to democracy, so I hope this AI platform can make a meaningful impact in Nigeria.
Any tool that can help voters access reliable information is a positive development. However, I caution against over-reliance on AI, as human judgment and verification will still be essential.
While the intentions behind this app seem good, I’m concerned about the potential for it to be weaponized for political gain. Robust safeguards and independent oversight will be critical.
This AI tool could be a valuable asset in protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s elections. Misinformation is a growing concern, so any efforts to verify information and promote transparency are commendable.
I agree. Fact-checking and rapid response to falsehoods are essential in the digital age. Let’s hope this app lives up to its promise.
