System of a Down Drummer Lashes Out at Charlize Theron Over Misattributed Quote

System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan sparked controversy this week after sharing inflammatory comments about actress Charlize Theron based on misinformation circulating online.

On April 20, 2026, Dolmayan reposted an Instagram graphic originally shared by conservative TV host David Harris Jr. that falsely attributed a quote about gender identity to Theron. In his accompanying comment, Dolmayan wrote, “This woman should be in an asylum or jail. These children are being mentally abused, statistically impossible.”

The quote in question—”What drives me is this: my children are all queer. My eldest child is non-binary. My son is gay, my youngest child is fluid”—was actually spoken by actress Marcia Gay Harden during the 2023 Drag Isn’t Dangerous online telethon. The statement was incorrectly attributed to Theron, who also participated in the same event, likely causing the confusion.

The incident, documented by music news outlet The PRP before Dolmayan’s Instagram Story expired, highlights the pervasive problem of misinformation on social media platforms. Once shared, such false attributions can quickly spread and fuel divisive rhetoric, particularly around sensitive topics like LGBTQ+ issues and parenting.

Both Harden and Theron are known for their advocacy work supporting LGBTQ+ rights. Theron, a mother of two adopted children, publicly shared in 2019 that her daughter Jackson had identified as female from an early age.

“I have two beautiful daughters who, just like any parent, I want to protect and I want to see thrive,” Theron stated at the time. “They were born who they are and exactly where in the world both of them get to find themselves as they grow up, and who they want to be is not for me to decide.”

She added, “My job as a parent is to celebrate them and to love them and to make sure that they have everything they need in order to be what they want to be. And I will do everything in my power for my kids to have that right and to be protected within that.”

This incident is the latest chapter in Dolmayan’s history of controversial political statements that often clash with the views of other System of a Down members, particularly frontman Serj Tankian. The ideological divide between the two musicians has become increasingly apparent in recent years, with Dolmayan frequently expressing conservative viewpoints while Tankian maintains more progressive positions.

Tankian, who is also Dolmayan’s brother-in-law, addressed their political differences in a 2020 Instagram post, writing that he maintains “love and respect” for Dolmayan “irrespective of our extremely polarized political commentary.”

“Remember, irrespective of the stance, only artists that truly care and are impassioned will risk alienating their base for what they consider the truth,” Tankian noted. “Our dilemma and possible fallacy is that we have two in one band. Some may consider that a weakness, but the artistic, political, and social dichotomy… has made System of a Down what it is today.”

The incident underscores the growing challenge of navigating social media where misinformation can spread rapidly. Public figures like Dolmayan, with substantial platforms and followings, can unintentionally amplify false information to thousands of fans. The situation also highlights the intensifying cultural debates around LGBTQ+ issues, particularly those involving children and parenting choices.

Neither Theron nor Harden has publicly responded to Dolmayan’s comments as of press time. System of a Down, formed in 1994, continues to perform despite the political differences between its members. The band last released new music in 2020, their first in 15 years, with songs addressing the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
