In a forceful rebuttal to swirling allegations, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Chairman Bhumana Karunakar Reddy has challenged critics to a “truth verification test” regarding accusations that adulterated ghee was used in preparing prasadam at the revered Tirupati temple.

“I am ready for a satya sodhana pariksha (truth verification test),” Reddy declared, addressing the controversy that has sparked national concern about practices at one of Hinduism’s most sacred sites. The temple, which attracts millions of devotees annually, has been embroiled in controversy after allegations surfaced that the ghee used in preparing laddus—the temple’s famous prasadam—contained animal fat.

Reddy firmly rejected these claims as “misinformation” aimed at tarnishing the temple’s reputation. He emphasized that the TTD maintains strict quality control measures for all ingredients used in prasadam preparation, with the ghee procurement process involving rigorous testing at multiple stages.

The controversy gained momentum following reports that Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) had supplied adulterated ghee to the temple. However, Reddy clarified that the TTD had conducted thorough investigations and found no evidence of adulteration in the ghee used for prasadam preparation.

“We have a robust system of checks and balances. Every batch of ghee undergoes stringent testing before being accepted for use in prasadam preparation,” Reddy explained. He added that the TTD has its own dairy farm and also sources ghee from reputable suppliers who must meet exacting standards.

The Tirupati temple, located in Andhra Pradesh, serves approximately 300,000 laddus daily to devotees, making the quality of ingredients a matter of significant importance. The temple’s prasadam is not merely a food offering but holds deep religious significance for millions of Hindu devotees.

The controversy has drawn attention from various political and religious quarters, with some opposition leaders calling for a comprehensive investigation into the temple’s procurement practices. The issue has also reignited debates about transparency in the management of religious institutions that handle substantial financial resources.

Dr. Ramachandra Reddy, a food safety expert consulted on the matter, explained the technical aspects of ghee testing: “Modern analytical techniques can easily detect the presence of animal fat in ghee. These tests examine fatty acid composition and other markers that differ between vegetable and animal fats.”

The TTD has now announced plans to establish an advanced in-house testing facility to further strengthen its quality control measures. This facility would enable real-time testing of all ingredients before they enter the prasadam preparation process.

Industry analysts note that the controversy highlights broader concerns about food adulteration in India’s supply chains. The country’s food testing infrastructure has been under scrutiny, with calls for stricter enforcement of food safety standards across religious and secular institutions alike.

“Religious institutions like Tirupati handle massive quantities of food items daily, making them potential targets for unscrupulous suppliers,” noted food industry analyst Priya Sharma. “This incident underscores the need for enhanced vigilance across the entire supply chain.”

The controversy occurs against the backdrop of increasing scrutiny of traditional religious practices and management of temple affairs across India. Several major temples have modernized their operations in recent years, implementing technology-driven solutions for inventory management and quality control.

Devotees have expressed mixed reactions to the controversy, with many standing firmly behind the temple authorities while others demand greater transparency.

“Faith and factual accuracy must go hand in hand,” said Venkatesh Rao, a regular visitor to the temple. “The temple authorities should welcome independent verification to put devotees’ minds at ease.”

As the dispute continues, the TTD Chairman’s willingness to undergo a “truth verification test” represents an unusual step in addressing allegations that threaten to undermine public trust in one of India’s most venerated religious institutions.
