In a defiant response to mounting conspiracy theories, the creators of “Stranger Things” have firmly rejected claims that a secret “Snyder Cut” version of Season 5 Volume 2 exists, despite a petition that has garnered nearly 400,000 signatures demanding its release.

The controversy began when an unverified, fan-made Google Doc started circulating on social media, allegedly detailing storylines that had been shortened or removed from the final season. The document quickly gained traction online, leading to a Change.org petition that has accumulated over 378,000 signatures from fans demanding Netflix release what they believe is “unseen footage.”

“We have been waiting since 2022 to see this last season,” wrote one petitioner in the most-liked comment on the campaign. “To be robbed of scenes by Netflix which really could have gelled the show all together is absolutely unacceptable, and I speak on behalf of all fans that we have been betrayed for the show we love.”

Earlier this week, actor Randy Havens, who portrays school teacher Mr. Clarke in the hit Netflix series, was among the first to push back against these claims. Now, in a recent Variety interview, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have categorically dismissed the conspiracy theory.

“I don’t think there’s a single cut scene in the entire season,” Ross Duffer stated, with his brother Matt adding: “The show has just grown so massive. Online, there’s just so much misinformation. Just tons of it.”

The Duffer brothers emphasized that the Google Doc at the center of the controversy is “obviously… not a real thing” and strongly denied accusations that Netflix had interfered with their creative vision.

“Netflix was, and has always been, incredible,” Matt Duffer explained. “There’s no interference or direction at all from them on us. They really trust us, and that’s been true from Season 1 on. It’s never changed, even though the show and the size of the audience have grown.”

This controversy comes amid another challenge for the series as its final season faces significant review bombing, particularly following Episode 7, titled “The Bridge.” The episode featured a pivotal scene where character Will Byers, played by Noah Schnapp, comes out to his friends, telling them he “doesn’t like girls.” This emotional moment, which occurs as the villainous Vecna finalizes his world domination plans, ends with Will being comforted by his friends.

The Duffer brothers defended this storyline as an essential part of the character’s journey and the show’s broader themes.

“The coming out scene is something we’ve been building to for nine years now,” Ross Duffer explained. “It was a really important scene for us, and a really important scene for Noah — not just from a thematic point of view, but also a narrative point of view.”

Matt Duffer described the scene as “the final step in Will’s journey” and integral to the show’s central conflict. “Will is, in so many ways, the key to defeating Vecna. Volume 1 is really about self-acceptance, right? I mean, that’s sort of step one.”

The creators admitted they were unprepared for the backlash, with Matt Duffer noting, “Because it is, as Ross said, something we’ve been building for a really long time. I always say, Ross and I are many things, but subtle is not one of those things!”

Despite the review bombing, Matt Duffer shared that he’s been in contact with Noah Schnapp since the scene aired, saying the actor is “in a really good place” and “very proud of the scene.”

The controversy surrounding both the alleged “Snyder Cut” and the review bombing highlights the intense fan engagement with “Stranger Things” as it concludes its run. The series, which debuted in 2016, has become one of Netflix’s most successful original productions, building a dedicated global fanbase over its five-season run.

As “Stranger Things” prepares to close this chapter, the Duffers have already teased details about an upcoming live-action spinoff that will address unresolved plot threads from the Season 5 finale, ensuring the franchise’s universe will continue to expand beyond its original storyline.
