Misinformation on social media sparked violence during what began as peaceful labor protests across Noida, according to Gautam Buddha Nagar Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh. Authorities have filed formal complaints against two social media accounts allegedly responsible for escalating tensions during demonstrations in Noida Phase-2.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Commissioner Singh emphasized that police did not use firearms and only employed minimal force at two locations where protests turned violent. “Today, at approximately 83 locations across Noida, approximately 42,000 laborers took to the streets in support of their demands. In only two of these locations, due to violent protests, minimal force was used,” Singh stated.

The commissioner noted that at the vast majority of protest sites—78 out of 83 locations—authorities successfully dispersed crowds through dialogue and negotiation without incident. However, the situation deteriorated in areas bordering neighboring districts when outside agitators allegedly infiltrated the demonstrations.

“In some areas, especially those bordering other districts, a group from other districts arrived and tried to make the atmosphere provocative and violent,” Singh explained. Several suspects have already been arrested, while authorities continue to identify others through CCTV footage. The commissioner warned that anyone engaging in violent protests or taking the law into their own hands would face strict consequences.

The unrest in Noida, one of India’s major industrial hubs in Uttar Pradesh, began as factory workers demanded wage increases. What started as peaceful demonstrations eventually escalated into violence, with protesters allegedly vandalizing vehicles and property while engaging in stone-pelting confrontations with police.

Commissioner Singh appealed for calm, pointing out that most worker demands have already been addressed through recent negotiations. “Most of your demands, including four out of five demands, were met the very next day through an agreement based on your own demands,” she said.

Among the concessions already secured are double overtime pay, the formation of a POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) committee to address workplace harassment complaints against women and other laborers, installation of complaint boxes for workers to file grievances against management, and four paid leaves per month.

The industrial unrest in Noida highlights growing tensions in India’s manufacturing sector, where workers increasingly demand better wages and working conditions amid rising living costs. Noida, part of the National Capital Region surrounding Delhi, hosts numerous factories producing electronics, garments, and various consumer goods, employing hundreds of thousands of workers, many of whom are migrants from poorer states.

In response to the situation, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has dispatched a high-powered committee to address the crisis. This committee has already conducted extensive discussions with stakeholders, including labor organizations and worker representatives, and is expected to submit recommendations soon.

“A high-powered committee has been sent by the Chief Minister today. This committee has held extensive discussions and meetings with all stakeholders, including labor organizations, workers’ representatives, and other stakeholders, and will soon submit its recommendations. Therefore, I appeal to all to maintain patience,” Commissioner Singh said.

The incident underscores the growing influence of social media in labor movements across India, with platforms increasingly serving as organizational tools for workers while simultaneously presenting risks when misinformation spreads. Authorities are now investigating how false information circulated online might have transformed peaceful demonstrations into violent confrontations.

As investigations continue, police have promised swift action against those responsible for spreading rumors that allegedly exacerbated tensions during the protests.
