Podcast Host Calls for Celebrity Accountability as Nicki Minaj Faces Criticism for Political Statements
Podcast host Knowa De Baraso has publicly challenged rapper Nicki Minaj over what he describes as her promotion of misinformation and recent alignment with the MAGA movement, adding his voice to growing criticism of the artist’s political commentary.
Through a series of Instagram stories posted on January 1, De Baraso expressed concern about the impact of Minaj’s statements on public discourse, particularly regarding U.S. political figures and the ongoing violence in Nigeria.
“Nicki’s recent statements are troubling. She has promoted misinformation and used rhetoric about U.S. politicians that she is frankly uneducated about,” De Baraso stated, highlighting what he sees as a broader issue of celebrity responsibility.
De Baraso, who hosts the iHeart podcast “Now You Know with Knowa De Baraso,” shared a clip from political commentator Angela Rye addressing Minaj’s characterization of violence in Nigeria as religiously motivated persecution of Christians. He captioned the repost with “nail on the head,” endorsing Rye’s perspective.
“I fully support celebrities engaging in politics, even if they choose to align with Republicans,” De Baraso told Hindustan Times, “but when misinformation is presented as fact, it becomes toxic to the political process.”
The controversy follows Minaj’s December appearance at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in Phoenix, where she praised former President Donald Trump, criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom, and referenced Vice President J.D. Vance. This marked a more public political stance for the artist, who has increasingly vocalized conservative-aligned opinions on her social media platforms.
In one particularly pointed Instagram story, De Baraso wrote: “Nicki Minaj… I’d tag you if you didn’t have to delete your Instagram due to backlash. You’ve ruined your legacy over a party that will be gone in a matter of 3 years. a party that will be dead, in just 3 years.”
The podcast host also praised Cardi B, Minaj’s long-standing musical rival, commending her for what he described as “unwavering commitment to the rights of all Americans” – a clear juxtaposition of the two artists’ political approaches.
Minaj has faced significant public criticism beyond her AmericaFest appearance. Her statements on various issues, including COVID-19 vaccination and international conflicts, have drawn scrutiny from fact-checkers and media outlets. Critics have accused her of amplifying unverified claims to her substantial social media following, which includes over 150 million followers across platforms.
The entertainment industry has been increasingly divided over celebrity political engagement, with some arguing that artists have a responsibility to use their platforms thoughtfully, while others maintain that entertainers should focus primarily on their craft.
De Baraso, whose podcast frequently features political figures and celebrities discussing cultural impact, emphasized his commitment to combating misinformation: “One of my biggest goals has always been making sure that celebrities and influencers use their platforms responsibly by spreading truthful, accurate information. I take that responsibility seriously myself, and I make every effort to ensure that what I say is rooted in fact.”
This incident highlights the growing intersection between entertainment, social media, and political discourse in America, where celebrity endorsements and statements can significantly influence public opinion, particularly among younger demographics.
As the 2024 election cycle intensifies, industry observers anticipate that more entertainers will likely take public political positions, raising further questions about responsibility, accuracy, and the impact of celebrity voices on American political dialogue.
