Government Information Officers Strengthen Network to Combat Misinformation in Marinduque

Information officers from various government agencies across Marinduque province have renewed their pledge to build a more coordinated communication network amid growing concerns over the spread of misinformation.

The commitment came during the PIA Marinduque Communicators Network 2025 Forum held on November 21 in Boac, the provincial capital. The event, themed “Connect, Communicate, Collaborate: Building Communications Network for Informed and Empowered Communities,” brought together representatives from both national and local government offices.

Participants highlighted the urgent need to strengthen accurate information dissemination in an era where false information can spread rapidly through social media and other digital platforms. The forum specifically focused on equipping information officers with practical communication tools and establishing a unified system for delivering reliable public information.

“Strengthening our communication network is key to ensuring that Marinduqueños receive accurate, timely, and meaningful information,” said Dennis Nebrejo, PIA Marinduque Government Information Center Coordinator, who expressed gratitude to all participants for their engagement during the forum.

The day-long event featured specialized training sessions, including workshops on effective news writing and fact-checking techniques. These sessions were facilitated by Rachel Ganancial from PIA Palawan and Ace Sapit, PIA MIMAROPA Information Officer III, who provided participants with practical skills to produce clear, accurate, and verified information for public consumption.

The diverse group of attendees included information officers from key national government agencies operating in the province. Representatives came from the Department of Labor and Employment, Philippine Statistics Authority, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, Department of Education, Department of Science and Technology, Land Transportation Office, Department of Agrarian Reform, and the Philippine Coast Guard.

Local institutions were also well-represented, with officials from the Provincial Information Office, Provincial Health Office, Marinduque State University, and the municipal governments of Boac, Mogpog, and Torrijos actively participating in discussions and planning sessions.

During the collaborative dialogue, participants articulated their shared commitment to responsible information dissemination that prioritizes public interest. A representative from the Department of Agrarian Reform emphasized the importance of crafting messages that are “not only informative but also understandable to their intended beneficiaries”—highlighting the need for communication that reaches all segments of the population, particularly in rural areas where access to information can be limited.

Representatives from the Department of Education added another critical dimension to responsible communication, reiterating their obligation to protect the identity and welfare of minors who may be featured in public communications. This ethical consideration underscores the nuanced approach needed in government messaging.

The forum comes at a critical time for Marinduque, a small island province southeast of Manila with a population of approximately 235,000. Like many provinces in the Philippines, Marinduque has seen increased digital connectivity in recent years, bringing both opportunities for faster information dissemination and challenges related to misinformation.

Government communicators in island provinces like Marinduque face unique challenges, including geographic isolation, limited resources, and sometimes unreliable internet connectivity—factors that can hamper coordinated communication efforts. This forum represents a strategic effort to overcome these barriers through systematic collaboration.

The initiative aligns with broader national efforts to strengthen government communication networks and combat misinformation, particularly as the Philippines prepares for future challenges including natural disasters, public health emergencies, and other situations where accurate information becomes crucial for public safety and welfare.

Participants left the forum with renewed determination to maintain regular coordination and implement the communication strategies discussed during the sessions, setting the groundwork for more effective information dissemination throughout Marinduque in 2025 and beyond.
