Australian actor Guy Pearce has issued a public apology after sharing content on social media that contained what he acknowledged as “misinformation and falsehoods” about Israel while expressing support for Palestine.
“It has been brought to my attention that, in my support of Palestine, I have inadvertently re-posted articles, and/or statements, that have contained misinformation and falsehoods,” Pearce said in a statement to Jewish News. “I am aware how sharing inaccurate content can cause confusion and distress; for this I am deeply sorry. I will certainly endeavour to be more diligent in future to verify anything I share online.”
According to reports from Jewish News, the “L.A. Confidential” and “Memento” star had shared controversial material that included content from far-right commentator Nick Fuentes, known for his white nationalist views. The posts reportedly contained conspiracy theories blaming Israel for the September 11 terrorist attacks and falsely accused Israeli officials of involvement in the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The actor also allegedly shared posts containing antisemitic tropes about Jewish control of the pornography industry and gambling establishments. One post Pearce reportedly shared in early November made inflammatory claims about “Jewish Zionists” owning Las Vegas casinos that have “caused gambling addictions, debt and prostitution.”
Following the initial apology, Pearce announced on Saturday morning that he would be taking a hiatus from social media platforms. “Earlier this week, I issued an apology for sharing misleading and inaccurate posts and commentary on social media,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “I meant every word of that apology but I recognize that meaningful action must accompany any apology. To prevent any further hurt, confusion or damage to others, I will be stepping back from social media for the time being.”
Pearce’s situation highlights the increasingly complex role celebrities play in the public discourse around the Israel-Palestine conflict, which has intensified since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and the subsequent military campaign in Gaza. Many entertainment industry figures have faced scrutiny and criticism for their positions on the conflict.
Social media has become a minefield for public figures commenting on geopolitical issues, with misinformation spreading rapidly across platforms. The consequences can be significant, potentially affecting professional relationships and public perception.
Pearce, 56, is currently promoting “The Brutalist,” a film directed by Brady Corbet that premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September. The Emmy and Golden Globe winner has enjoyed a respected career spanning more than three decades, with notable roles in films such as “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” “Iron Man 3,” and the HBO miniseries “Mare of Easttown.”
Entertainment industry observers note that celebrity statements on complex political matters can have outsized impact due to their large platforms, with many fans looking to their favorite actors for guidance on issues they may not fully understand themselves.
The incident also underscores the broader issue of antisemitism and how it can be inadvertently amplified through social media sharing, even by those who may not recognize antisemitic tropes or conspiracy theories when encountering them online.
While some fans have expressed support for Pearce’s decision to step away from social media and his acknowledgment of his error, others have questioned whether the apology goes far enough in addressing the specific harmful content shared.
Representatives for Pearce have not provided additional comments beyond his public statements.
