AIADMK’s Palaniswami Dismisses DMK Claims on Delimitation, Criticizes Stalin’s Leadership

AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has forcefully rejected DMK’s claims that the Centre’s proposed Lok Sabha constituency delimitation would adversely impact Tamil Nadu, accusing Chief Minister M K Stalin of deliberately spreading misinformation on the issue.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Coimbatore on Thursday, Palaniswami claimed that Stalin was propagating false narratives about delimitation due to fears of defeat in the upcoming April 9 Assembly polls.

“The central government has already provided assurances that Tamil Nadu won’t be affected,” Palaniswami stated, emphasizing that the delimitation process would be implemented fairly across all states. He further alleged that Stalin opposes the 33 percent reservation for women primarily to prevent the central government from gaining political credit for the initiative.

The delimitation controversy has emerged as a significant political flashpoint in Tamil Nadu, where regional identity and autonomy from central control remain sensitive issues. The DMK has consistently positioned itself as a defender of Tamil interests against perceived encroachment from New Delhi.

In a direct response to former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s criticisms, Palaniswami questioned the Congress leader’s contributions to Tamil Nadu during his tenure as a Union minister. “What has he done for Tamil Nadu despite being a Union minister for years?” Palaniswami asked.

The AIADMK leader also accused DMK parliamentarians of failing to effectively represent Tamil Nadu’s interests in Parliament, contrasting this with his own party’s record. “AIADMK MPs once stalled parliament for 22 days for Cauvery water rights,” he recalled, highlighting his party’s commitment to regional issues.

On the contentious NEET examination, Palaniswami accused both Congress and DMK of double standards. “NEET was introduced by Congress and DMK, and now they oppose it,” he claimed, attempting to undermine the DMK’s credibility on education policy.

Palaniswami painted a grim picture of Tamil Nadu under DMK governance, claiming sharp increases in essential goods prices, electricity rates, and taxes. He also alleged deteriorating law and order, rising crime and drug issues, stalled infrastructure projects, and unfulfilled election promises.

Addressing political alliances, Palaniswami defended AIADMK’s partnership with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). “When the NDA alliance was formed, Amit Shah clearly said AIADMK would lead, and Edappadi Palaniswami would be the chief minister candidate. So why talk about conflict with Delhi?” he questioned, pushing back against DMK’s narrative of a Delhi-versus-Tamil Nadu conflict.

The former Chief Minister highlighted achievements during the AIADMK’s previous tenure, including the Avinashi-Athikadavu scheme, drinking water initiatives, metro plans, airport expansion, and industrial parks. He accused the current DMK administration of stalling these development projects.

Looking forward, Palaniswami announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit Coimbatore on April 18, urging citizens to attend the event. “Listen to him. A strong India and prosperous Tamil Nadu will be created,” he claimed, tying Tamil Nadu’s prosperity to national leadership.

If returned to power, Palaniswami promised to reopen Amma mini clinics and canteens, strengthen law and order, improve infrastructure, and create employment opportunities. He also pledged to review what he described as politically motivated cases filed against AIADMK members during the DMK administration.

In a later address at Siddhapudur, Palaniswami recounted his experience as a parliamentarian in 1998 when a women’s reservation bill was first introduced, highlighting that Prime Minister Modi had successfully enacted legislation that had been stalled decades earlier.

The AIADMK leader concluded by defending his party’s alliance with the BJP as strategically necessary to “oust an anti-people regime,” while accusing Stalin of hypocrisy for criticizing the partnership when DMK itself had previously allied with the BJP in 1999, with Murasoli Maran serving in Vajpayee’s cabinet.

As Tamil Nadu approaches the April 9 Assembly elections, the intensifying political rhetoric underscores the high stakes for both the ruling DMK and the opposition AIADMK in a state known for its distinctive political landscape and strong regional identity.
