National Citizen Party Leader Refutes Allegations of Financial Discrepancies

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has strongly denied allegations of inconsistencies in his election affidavit, describing recent criticisms as a deliberate misinformation campaign designed to undermine his political credibility.

In a detailed statement posted on his verified Facebook page on January 7, Islam addressed what he characterized as confusion over his income and asset declarations, asserting that the scrutiny he faces is politically motivated rather than factually based.

“This campaign isn’t about uncovering facts, but about placing an honest political figure in the dock of suspicion,” Islam stated, noting that many politicians who maintain lavish lifestyles both domestically and internationally face little comparable scrutiny despite apparent discrepancies in their own declarations.

Islam provided a comprehensive breakdown of his financial situation to counter the allegations. He clarified that the Tk16 lakh (approximately $15,000) listed as annual income in his affidavit represents his total earnings for the 2024-25 fiscal year, not sudden wealth acquired after leaving government service.

According to his statement, approximately Tk11 lakh of this amount came from his seven-month tenure as an adviser to the interim government, with the remainder earned through legitimate consulting work after his resignation. Islam emphasized that all income was processed through banking channels, properly taxed, and fully documented.

Regarding his assets, Islam explained that his total declared wealth of Tk32 lakh represents accumulated savings over his 27-year career, not a single year’s earnings. These assets include savings from his government salary, gifts received at family and social occasions, gold ornaments, furniture, and electronic items.

The political leader also addressed questions about his bank accounts. He stated that he currently maintains only two accounts—one with Sonali Bank and another with City Bank that was specifically opened for election expenses on December 28. Islam noted that his Sonali Bank account had approximately Tk10,000 at the time of his resignation from government service, with subsequent deposits including government-allocated funds for ministerial furniture purchases, a transaction he says was clearly documented in his affidavit.

Islam further clarified that he owns no land, flat, or vehicle—neither during his time as an adviser nor since his resignation.

Addressing professional questions, Islam specified that his current occupation is consulting, not teaching as some reports have suggested. He disclosed that he provides strategic and policy advice to a technology firm, the name of which was included in documents submitted to the Election Commission. He insisted the firm has no government contracts and has never received preferential treatment due to his involvement.

“My role is based on political and administrative experience and involves nothing unusual or secretive,” Islam stated.

Political analysts note that allegations of financial impropriety have become increasingly common in Bangladesh’s contentious political landscape. The scrutiny of Islam’s finances comes at a time when the NCP is positioning itself as a reform-minded alternative to traditional political forces.

Islam concluded his statement by suggesting that the transparency of his limited assets and straightforward income declarations demonstrates his commitment to remaining outside the politics of power abuse or illegal wealth accumulation—a stance he believes has triggered the misinformation campaign against him.

The controversy highlights the growing importance of financial transparency in Bangladesh’s political sphere, where public figures face increasing demands for accountability regarding their personal wealth and income sources.
