In a chilling incident that captured national attention this January, a viral video of a teenage assault in Kumamoto has reignited debates about social media vigilantism and the failures of traditional justice systems in addressing school violence.

The disturbing footage showed a junior high school third-year student being surrounded by peers on a commercial building rooftop in central Kumamoto. One boy repeatedly punched and kicked the victim while others jeered “Die.” The injured student returned home with a bloodied face and required hospitalization for injuries needing two weeks to heal.

When conventional channels seemed inadequate, the victim’s 51-year-old mother took matters into her own hands. Frustrated by what she perceived as police inaction and concerned for her traumatized son who suffered sleepless nights after the attack, she conducted her own investigation through social media.

“I couldn’t rely on the police,” the mother explained, describing her decision to identify her son’s attackers independently. After obtaining footage of the assault that had been filmed by one of the participants, she posted it on Instagram with a simple plea: “Please share.” Her post included a warning to the perpetrators that they faced “social sanctions” if they failed to apologize.

The video quickly gained traction, particularly among parents with children of similar ages. One viewer forwarded it to “Deathdol Note,” a popular account on X (formerly Twitter) that has amassed 1.15 million followers by exposing misconduct ranging from celebrity scandals to violent incidents.

Masato Kosaka, the 37-year-old behind Deathdol Note, found the Kumamoto video “sickening” and immediately shared it with his massive audience. In an interview with The Asahi Shimbun, Kosaka justified his approach: “Schools and police have repeatedly covered up bullying. My goal is to cause a stir on X and get the adults to act.”

A survivor of a high school gang assault himself, Kosaka deliberately posts videos without blurring faces, believing perpetrators deserve public exposure. He has shared approximately 20 similar assault videos from across Japan but acknowledges he performs minimal verification of the content, often considering a doctor’s medical certificate sufficient justification for posting.

The consequences of such exposure have been far-reaching. Once Deathdol Note amplified the Kumamoto video, internet vigilantes quickly identified and circulated the suspected assailant’s name, photographs, home address, and school information across social media platforms.

This digital manhunt had unintended victims. The local board of education reported that many uninvolved students at the identified school became terrified of being associated with the incident, with some unable to sleep or eat. In other cases involving Deathdol Note posts, YouTubers have filmed themselves making unannounced visits to alleged perpetrators’ homes and schools.

The concerning trend prompted Education Minister Yohei Matsumoto to issue a public warning on January 9, cautioning that such doxxing “could lead to new human rights violations against children” and urging the public to “respond calmly.”

Critics argue that Kosaka’s methods effectively make him a bully himself through public shaming. However, he dismisses these concerns, insisting no “major secondary damage” has occurred and that “a certain amount of secondary damage is unavoidable” to prevent institutional cover-ups.

For the victim’s family, the ends appeared to justify the means. Following the public outcry, police arrested a student in connection with the assault on suspicion of causing bodily injury. “If the video hadn’t been exposed,” the victim’s mother maintained, “he would never have been arrested.”

This case reflects broader tensions in Japanese society regarding bullying, institutional accountability, and the role of social media in delivering justice. Deathdol Note continues to receive hundreds of direct messages about bullying incidents nationwide, suggesting a significant gap between public expectations and official responses to school violence.

As social media platforms increasingly function as alternative justice systems, the boundary between legitimate exposure of wrongdoing and harmful vigilantism remains contested territory in the digital age.
