Misinformation Hampered Investigation into Brown University Shooting, Police Say

Law enforcement officials revealed Wednesday that their investigation into a shooting near Brown University was significantly complicated by waves of misinformation that spread rapidly in the aftermath of the incident.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez told reporters that false information circulating online created substantial challenges for officers responding to the April 30 shooting that left a 24-year-old student critically injured on the campus of the prestigious Ivy League university.

“The misinformation that was being spewed out there really caused a lot of issues,” Perez said during a news conference. He specifically mentioned false claims that circulated about multiple shooters or additional victims, which diverted crucial resources during the critical early hours of the investigation.

The shooting victim, identified as a Brown University graduate student, remains hospitalized in stable but critical condition after being shot in the chest, according to medical officials. The student was walking near campus when the shooting occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m.

Authorities have arrested 21-year-old Kelan Florez in connection with the shooting. He faces multiple charges including assault with intent to commit murder and carrying a pistol without a license. Florez, who is not affiliated with Brown University, has pleaded not guilty to all charges during his arraignment.

According to investigators, the shooting appears to have been a targeted attack, though they have not yet established a clear motive or any prior connection between the suspect and victim. They emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the university community.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley acknowledged the fear that gripped the campus community during the hours following the shooting. “In the social media era, rumors spread incredibly fast, and unfortunately, much of the information circulating was simply incorrect,” Smiley said. “This created additional anxiety during an already traumatic situation.”

The incident has prompted renewed discussions about campus security protocols at Brown and other universities nationwide. Brown President Christina Paxson announced the formation of a campus safety review committee that will evaluate current security measures and recommend potential improvements.

“The safety of our students, faculty and staff remains our highest priority,” Paxson said in a statement. “While this appears to have been an isolated incident, we must take this opportunity to ensure our emergency response and communication systems are as effective as possible.”

Campus security experts note that the Brown shooting highlights the growing challenge universities face in managing communications during crisis situations. Robert Mueck, former director of public safety at St. John’s College and a campus security consultant, explained that institutions must balance providing timely information with ensuring accuracy.

“Universities are caught in an impossible situation,” Mueck said. “Students and parents demand immediate information, but premature announcements risk spreading inaccurate details that can hamper investigations and cause unnecessary panic.”

The shooting at Brown comes amid heightened concerns about campus safety following several high-profile incidents at universities across the country in recent years. According to data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting program, violent crime on or near college campuses has remained relatively stable over the past decade, though public perception often suggests otherwise.

Providence police officials indicated that their investigation remains active, with detectives still gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. They urged community members to report information directly to law enforcement rather than sharing unverified details on social media platforms.

“In situations like this, we need the community’s help, but that help is most effective when channeled properly,” Chief Perez emphasized. “Sharing speculation online rarely aids our work and often creates additional problems that divert resources from the actual investigation.”

University officials have arranged counseling services for students and faculty affected by the shooting and have increased security patrols around campus as a precautionary measure.
