Authorities apprehended a man Monday on multiple charges after an incident that began with a routine traffic stop and escalated into alleged online threats against law enforcement personnel, according to the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit.
Sagar Halder was arrested following an investigation by the CTTC’s Cyber Crime Investigation Department’s Digital Forensic Team. The arrest stems from a confrontation that occurred on January 9 in Dhaka’s Motijheel commercial district, where Halder was initially stopped during standard traffic enforcement operations.
During the traffic check, Halder claimed his vehicle documentation was in the process of being renewed. However, when officers conducted an online verification of his records, they discovered his documents had actually expired in December 2023, more than two years prior. Furthermore, the system revealed outstanding government dues exceeding 102,000 Taka (approximately $940 USD) associated with the vehicle.
Traffic authorities subsequently filed a case against Halder under the provisions of the Road Transport Act for operating a vehicle with expired documentation and unpaid fees. It was at this point that the situation reportedly intensified.
According to CTTC officials, Halder responded to the citation by becoming combative and attempting to incite bystanders against the traffic sergeant on duty. The confrontation might have ended there, but investigators allege Halder then took to social media to escalate the matter further.
“After leaving the scene, the suspect initiated a Facebook Live broadcast where he made defamatory statements about police personnel and issued explicit threats against officers,” a CTTC spokesperson stated in the press release. “This transformation of a routine traffic violation into a cybercrime involving misinformation and intimidation of government officials prompted our department’s involvement.”
