In a heated political exchange, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has strongly refuted opposition claims that his administration neglected farmers by withholding aid from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) despite receiving substantial donations.
The controversy erupted when Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve alleged that while the CMRF collected Rs 106.57 crore in October, only Rs 75,000 was distributed to farmers suffering from recent agricultural disasters. Danve’s accusations, posted on social media platform X, characterized Fadnavis as “the miserly chief of a generous state.”
“For the farmers affected by heavy rains, people sent billions of rupees to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund in October. But the state’s chief spent only Rs 75,000,” Danve wrote. He further questioned whether the government was treating these funds as “an election fund given by their industrialist friends” rather than disaster relief.
The Chief Minister’s Office quickly countered these claims, stating that farmers received Rs 61.51 crore from the relief fund over the past three months spanning October through December. Officials labeled Danve’s figures as “factually incorrect” and announced an investigation into how such “wrong information” was provided.
“Providing statistics for just October creates misunderstandings,” the CMO stated in its response. “The CM’s Relief Fund is expended on a daily basis. Therefore, the total amount increases every day. Drawing conclusions based solely on one month’s data is incorrect.”
The dispute comes against the backdrop of devastating weather events that struck Maharashtra in September. Heavy rainfall and severe flooding caused widespread destruction across the Marathwada region and parts of western Maharashtra, damaging crops and eroding fertile soil. Agricultural experts estimate that these weather events have significantly impacted the state’s agricultural output for the current growing season.
In response to the crisis, the state government announced a substantial Rs 31,628-crore compensation package on October 7. The relief plan was designed to support more than 60 lakh farmers who suffered crop damage and soil erosion. Following this announcement, donations began flowing into the CMRF from legislators, MPs and citizens hoping to provide additional aid to affected agricultural communities.
The CMO emphasized that the relief fund represents just one channel through which farmers receive assistance. Substantial aid is also flowing through the Relief and Rehabilitation Department and other government agencies. According to official statements, over Rs 14,000 crore from the special package has already been deposited directly into farmers’ bank accounts, with disbursements continuing.
This political clash highlights the ongoing challenges facing Maharashtra’s agricultural sector, which employs approximately 55 percent of the state’s workforce and contributes significantly to its economy. The region has faced increasing climate volatility in recent years, with alternating droughts and floods putting pressure on farming communities and government relief systems.
The controversy also reflects heightened political tensions in Maharashtra as various parties position themselves ahead of future elections. The Shiv Sena split into two factions in 2022, with the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction (UBT) now in opposition to the ruling coalition that includes Fadnavis’s Bharatiya Janata Party.
Agricultural policy experts note that timely disbursement of relief funds is critical for farmers’ recovery, as delays can force vulnerable households to take high-interest loans or sell assets at distressed prices to cover immediate expenses and prepare for the next growing season.
