Kerala Congress (M) Refutes Claims of Poor Election Performance Despite Seat Losses
A heated dispute over election performance has emerged in Kerala, with the Kerala Congress (M) [KC(M)] strongly rejecting allegations of poor results in the recent local body elections. The controversy erupted just one day after official results were announced, with party officials claiming they are being targeted by a “deliberate misinformation campaign.”
KC(M) district president Lopes Mathew issued a detailed statement Sunday defending the party’s electoral performance, particularly in its stronghold of Pala Assembly constituency. According to Mathew, the United Democratic Front (UDF), of which KC(M) is a member, secured 91 seats across grama panchayats and municipal wards in the constituency, outperforming the Left Democratic Front (LDF) which won 87 seats.
“In the Pala municipality, we retained 10 of the 11 seats we had won in the previous election, losing just one by a narrow margin,” Mathew emphasized, highlighting the party’s continued dominance in its traditional power center. He added that KC(M) also maintained control of key district panchayat divisions within the constituency.
In a significant victory for the party, Mathew pointed to the reclaiming of the Kidangoor division, which encompasses several panchayats including Kozhuvanal, Mutholi, and parts of Karoor. This success contributed to what he described as the party’s achievement in winning seats “in almost all segments of the Pala constituency across district panchayat, municipality and local bodies.”
Despite the spirited defense, Mathew acknowledged that KC(M)’s overall seat tally had declined substantially, dropping from 208 seats in the previous local body polls to 152 in the current election. This represents a loss of 56 seats, or approximately 27% of their previous representation.
The local body elections in Kerala are viewed as crucial indicators of political trends ahead of future assembly elections. These contests often reflect shifting alliances and voter sentiment in the state’s complex political landscape, which features strong competition between the LDF, UDF, and an increasingly visible Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Mathew also made an interesting observation about the broader electoral dynamics in Kottayam district, noting that while the LDF had improved its performance compared to previous elections and reclaimed seven panchayats from the UDF, the BJP’s electoral gains had ultimately worked to the UDF’s advantage.
This suggests a complex three-way electoral battle where vote splitting and strategic considerations play crucial roles. Political analysts in the region have suggested that in many constituencies, the rise of the BJP has altered traditional voting patterns, sometimes benefiting one of the two major fronts depending on demographic and local factors.
The KC(M), a regional party with significant influence in central Kerala, particularly in Christian-dominated areas, has historically been an important player in state politics. Founded as a splinter group from the Kerala Congress, the party has experienced multiple factions and realignments over the years.
The current controversy highlights the high stakes of even local body elections in Kerala’s intensely competitive political environment, where perception of momentum and strength can impact future electoral prospects and alliance negotiations.
As the dust settles on these local elections, all parties will be analyzing the results closely to prepare for upcoming electoral battles, with the KC(M) clearly determined to control the narrative around its performance despite the acknowledged reduction in its seat count.

As someone interested in the mining and energy sectors, I’ll be keeping an eye on this situation. Stable governance and reliable policymaking are important for maintaining a favorable investment climate in the region.
Absolutely. Political uncertainty or disputes over election outcomes can create risks and challenges for industries like mining and energy that rely on consistent policies and regulations.
The party’s defense of its performance in the Pala constituency, citing seat counts and municipal control, provides some useful context. However, more detailed analysis of the overall election results would be needed to fully evaluate their claims.
That’s a fair point. A comprehensive review of the data across all constituencies would help determine if there are any broader patterns or discrepancies worth examining further.
