Jamaica’s Ruling Party Launches Campaign Against Misinformation

In a decisive move to combat what it describes as deliberate attempts to spread false information, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has announced plans to intensify its efforts against misinformation and disinformation campaigns targeting the government.

Speaking at a news conference at the party’s headquarters in St. Andrew on Monday, Senator Marlon Morgan, a member of the JLP Communications Taskforce, declared that the party would spare no effort in countering false narratives that undermine public trust.

“People who tell blatant lies and spread false information, ostensibly in their quest to score political points, do our democracy a grave disservice,” Morgan stated. “Misinformation and disinformation undermine our democracy and serve to erode public trust and confidence in institutions that deliver public services.”

Morgan highlighted a recent example involving claims that residents of the Maroon community of Accompong in St. Elizabeth were provided with “paint water” for drinking and domestic use. He categorically dismissed these allegations as false, describing them as part of a pattern of disinformation designed to discredit the government.

The initiative comes at a particularly sensitive time for Jamaica as the country continues to recover from Hurricane Melissa, which caused widespread devastation across the island. Despite the focus on disseminating information about recovery and reconstruction efforts, Morgan emphasized that the taskforce would be “even more strident” in fighting misinformation.

The JLP Communications Taskforce’s intensified approach reflects growing concerns about the impact of false information on Jamaica’s international reputation. Morgan warned that these efforts represent “deliberate and organised attempts to discredit Jamaica and destroy our goodwill across the international community.”

While affirming the JLP’s commitment to democratic ideals and robust political debate, Morgan drew a clear line between legitimate political discourse and what he termed “politically-curated lies.” He stated that such tactics are “not only reprehensible and unethical, but are in many instances unlawful.”

The announcement signals a more aggressive communications strategy from the ruling party as it seeks to control the narrative around its governance. Morgan stressed that the taskforce has a duty to ensure the public has access to accurate and verified information, pledging to ensure “correct, edifying and uplifting information is in the public domain.”

This push against misinformation aligns with global trends, as governments worldwide grapple with the proliferation of false information through social media and other digital platforms. The JLP’s approach suggests that political communication in Jamaica is entering a new phase where fact-checking and countering misinformation are becoming central components of party strategy.

Member of Parliament for St Andrew West Rural Juliet Cuthbert Flynn was also present at the news conference, underscoring the party’s unified stance on the issue.

As digital communication continues to evolve in Jamaica, the effectiveness of the JLP’s campaign against misinformation will likely be closely watched by political observers, media organizations, and citizens concerned about the quality of public discourse in the country’s democracy.
