Jack White Condemns Tennessee Congressman for Sharing AI-Generated Video

Legendary rock musician Jack White has publicly rebuked Republican Congressman Tim Burchett after the Tennessee representative shared a fabricated video of the artist and mocked his appearance on social media.

The dispute began when Burchett retweeted a five-second AI-generated clip that falsely showed White saying, “Don’t even think about listening to my music, you fascist.” The post was originally shared by the account @MAGAresponse with the caption, “What’s your response to Jack White?”

Burchett added his own commentary to the retweet, writing: “That cute little girl from the Addams Family got really ugly and angry,” making a derogatory reference to White’s appearance.

On Tuesday, the former White Stripes frontman responded through his Instagram account with a strongly-worded statement condemning both the fabricated content and the congressman’s behavior. “The great state of Tennessee deserves better, Mr. Burchett, but you and your cult are too dug in and blinded to even realize it,” White wrote.

In his 384-word post, White expressed disbelief that an elected official would share unverified content and resort to personal insults. “Can you believe that a U.S. congressman, that’s right, a CONGRESSMAN (from my state no less), a once hallowed and respected position in our society, would repost an A.I. generated video, containing a false comment that I never said… and like a 10-year-old on a playground, add to it attempted insults to my physical appearance?”

The musician’s rebuke comes amid growing concerns about AI-generated disinformation in political discourse, particularly as the United States approaches a contentious election season. Technology experts have warned that deepfakes and other AI manipulations could significantly impact public opinion and undermine trust in legitimate information.

White, who owns Third Man Records and has maintained studios in Nashville since 2009, has deep connections to Tennessee. His condemnation of a representative from his adopted state underscores the personal nature of the exchange.

The rock icon further criticized what he described as “sycophantic” politicians who “regurgitate fake Christian rhetoric” and lamented the current state of American politics. “What kind of joke are we all living in now? All of Trump’s lackeys and bootlicks like this elected official are cowards that would never talk this way to anybody like me or you in person,” White wrote.

While White has not explicitly told conservative supporters to stop listening to his music, he has been openly critical of former President Donald Trump in recent years. He previously called Trump “a disgusting, vile, egomaniac loser, child” for comments made about filmmaker Rob Reiner’s death.

White concluded his statement with a prediction that current MAGA supporters would eventually distance themselves from the movement: “There will come a time in the future when none of these right wingers will admit to being a part of this cult from this time period. All the MAGA hats will be in landfills and actual intelligent and honorable leadership will take their place.”

The incident highlights the increasing polarization in American culture and politics, with artists and public figures increasingly drawn into partisan conflicts. It also demonstrates the growing challenge of AI-generated content in public discourse, which threatens to blur the lines between reality and fabrication.

Rolling Stone senior writer Angie Martoccio recently praised White’s outspoken political stance, writing that he is “speaking truth to power and getting under the president’s skin, and his punches are landing. We should listen to him now, more than ever.”

As of publication time, Congressman Burchett has not publicly responded to White’s statement.

You’re right. Elected representatives have a responsibility to verify information before sharing it, especially when it involves attacking or misrepresenting a private citizen. This was a lapse in judgment.
