Bangladesh’s Information Minister Seeks UNESCO Partnership to Combat Digital Misinformation

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has called on UNESCO to help develop an effective roadmap to combat the rising tide of misinformation and disinformation in Bangladesh, highlighting the growing concern over false information in the digital age.

During a meeting at the secretariat on Monday, Swapon met with UNESCO Country Representative to Bangladesh Dr. Susan Vize, where they discussed potential collaborative efforts to strengthen media integrity and enhance information verification systems across the country.

“There is significant scope to expand cooperation between the Government of Bangladesh and UNESCO in the media sector,” Swapon said, emphasizing the need to leverage UNESCO’s expertise to ensure greater transparency and credibility of information as digital communication continues to evolve rapidly.

Dr. Vize briefed the minister on UNESCO’s ongoing activities in Bangladesh, particularly focusing on the organization’s efforts to strengthen media development and policy frameworks. She highlighted UNESCO’s global initiatives to combat misinformation and disinformation, which have become major concerns for governments and media organizations worldwide.

The UNESCO representative explained that the organization is placing special emphasis on fact-checking as a key tool to counter false narratives. As part of this initiative, students from various universities across Bangladesh are already receiving training in information verification techniques, building a foundation for a more media-literate population.

This meeting comes at a critical time when countries worldwide are grappling with the challenges posed by the rapid spread of misinformation through social media platforms and digital channels. Bangladesh, with its growing internet penetration rate and increasing social media usage, faces similar challenges in ensuring citizens have access to accurate information.

Media experts note that misinformation can have serious consequences, including inflaming social tensions, undermining democratic processes, and hampering public health initiatives. The COVID-19 pandemic particularly highlighted how false information could impact public health responses and vaccine acceptance.

The proposed collaboration between Bangladesh’s Information Ministry and UNESCO would likely include technical assistance in developing media literacy programs, establishing fact-checking protocols, and creating policy frameworks that promote responsible journalism while respecting freedom of expression.

UNESCO has been actively working with governments globally to implement the organization’s framework on information literacy and to promote ethical journalism standards. Their approach typically combines educational initiatives, policy development, and support for independent media organizations.

“The digital information landscape requires new approaches to ensure citizens can distinguish between reliable and misleading content,” media policy expert Rahman Ali told this reporter. “Partnerships between international organizations like UNESCO and national governments are essential to addressing these challenges effectively.”

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yeaser Khan Choudhury and Secretary Mahbuba Farjana were also present at the meeting, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing information integrity at the highest levels.

Dr. Vize assured the minister of UNESCO’s full support in developing comprehensive strategies to counter misinformation, which could potentially include training programs for journalists, educational initiatives for the public, and technical support for media regulatory frameworks.

The collaboration reflects a growing recognition that combating misinformation requires a multi-faceted approach involving government agencies, international organizations, media outlets, and educational institutions working in concert.

As Bangladesh continues to digitalize and more citizens turn to online sources for news and information, the partnership between the Information Ministry and UNESCO could play a crucial role in establishing standards and practices that promote information integrity while supporting the country’s democratic development.
