India swiftly granted Pakistan’s overflight clearance for Sri Lanka aid, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed Tuesday, rejecting Islamabad’s claims of deliberate delays as “ridiculous” and “anti-India misinformation.”

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal provided a detailed timeline of events, noting that Pakistan’s request was received by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad at approximately 1300 hours on December 1, 2025. Recognizing the humanitarian urgency, Indian authorities processed and approved the request within hours, granting permission by 1730 hours the same day.

“Given the urgency of humanitarian assistance, the Government of India processed the request expeditiously the same day and granted the overflight permission as per the itinerary proposed,” Jaiswal stated, emphasizing India’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka during the ongoing crisis.

The clarification comes amid escalating diplomatic tensions between the two neighboring countries. Pakistan’s Foreign Office continued to accuse India of obstruction even after the clearance was issued, claiming on social media platform X that “India continues to block humanitarian assistance from Pakistan to Sri Lanka.” They further alleged that an aircraft had been waiting “for over 60 hours now” for airspace access.

Pakistani officials also described India’s clearance as “operationally impractical,” claiming it was “time-bound for just a few hours and without validity for the return flight,” which they said severely hindered their relief mission.

The controversy took another turn when Pakistan’s High Commission in Sri Lanka shared photographs of delivered relief supplies. Social media users quickly identified visible October 2024 expiry dates on some items, raising questions about the quality of Pakistan’s humanitarian assistance.

The diplomatic spat unfolds against the backdrop of devastating conditions in Sri Lanka, which continues to suffer severe damage from Cyclone Ditwah. The natural disaster has triggered widespread flooding, landslides, and significant infrastructure damage across the island nation.

India has maintained its position as a first responder in the region, launching Operation Sagar Bandhu to provide comprehensive relief, restoration, and emergency support across affected districts in Sri Lanka. This operation represents part of India’s broader strategy of prioritizing regional humanitarian assistance under its “Neighborhood First” policy.

“India remains committed to assisting the people of Sri Lanka in these challenging times through all available means,” Jaiswal emphasized, highlighting the longstanding relationship between New Delhi and Colombo.

The humanitarian situation in Sri Lanka remains dire. According to the country’s Disaster Management Centre, at least 410 people have died and 336 remain missing as of Tuesday morning due to extreme weather incidents since November 16. The cyclone has displaced thousands of families and destroyed critical infrastructure, including roads, power lines, and communication networks.

Regional experts note that such humanitarian crises often become theaters for broader geopolitical competition in South Asia, with both India and Pakistan seeking to strengthen their influence and diplomatic standing through disaster relief efforts.

India has historically been among the first responders to natural disasters in the region, including previous flooding and landslide incidents in Sri Lanka, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and the 2015 Nepal earthquake. This approach aligns with India’s broader strategy of building goodwill and strengthening ties with neighboring countries through timely humanitarian assistance.

As relief operations continue, the focus remains on providing effective support to affected Sri Lankan communities while navigating the complex regional dynamics that influence humanitarian response in South Asia.
