HSE Warns Against Sunbed Misinformation, Cites Serious Cancer Risks

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has issued a stark warning about the dangers of sunbed use, specifically targeting misleading information being circulated on social media platforms. The health authority expressed “growing concern” about false claims suggesting sunbeds are safe, describing such statements as “false, dangerous, and not supported by any medical evidence.”

In a public health appeal, the HSE has urged young people throughout Ireland to avoid sunbeds entirely due to their significant long-term health risks. Medical experts emphasize that using sunbeds before age 35 substantially increases the risk of developing melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, with each additional use further elevating that risk.

Health officials are particularly alarmed by content spreading across social media channels where influencers promote sunbeds as a “safe” or “controlled” tanning method. These marketing tactics directly contradict established medical research on ultraviolet radiation exposure.

“Sunbeds are not a safe alternative to natural sunlight,” stated Shirley Potter, consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon at St. James’s Hospital in Dublin. “The UV radiation they deliver is intense and harmful, and the damage accumulates over time. We are seeing more young people presenting with early signs of skin damage, and in some cases, skin cancers that could have been prevented. No tan is worth the long-term risk.”

Public health experts are increasingly concerned about the targeted nature of misinformation campaigns. Dr. Breeda Neville, consultant in public health medicine at the HSE’s National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP), highlighted the specific targeting of younger demographics.

“Young people are being targeted with claims that are simply untrue,” Dr. Neville explained. “The science is clear: sunbeds increase your risk of cancer. We are asking parents, teachers and healthcare staff to help reinforce this message.”

This warning comes against the backdrop of existing legislation designed to protect vulnerable populations. The Public Health (Sunbeds) Act 2014 established several protective measures, including prohibiting anyone under 18 from using commercial sunbed facilities, banning the sale or rental of devices to minors, restricting certain marketing practices and health claims, and mandating warning notices at sunbed establishments.

Despite these protective measures, health officials believe more decisive action may be necessary. Last month, a Government working group recommended a complete ban on commercial sunbeds on public health grounds, signaling potential further restrictions in the future.

The HSE’s warning represents part of a broader public health strategy to combat rising skin cancer rates in Ireland. With melanoma rates continuing to increase globally, health authorities are particularly concerned about young people forming habits that may significantly increase their cancer risk later in life.

Medical professionals point to the intensity of UV radiation from sunbeds as particularly concerning. Unlike natural sun exposure, which varies in intensity and allows for gradual adaptation, sunbeds deliver concentrated UV radiation directly to the skin, often exceeding safe exposure levels. This intensified exposure can accelerate skin damage and potentially lead to cancerous changes in skin cells.

The intervention comes amid growing recognition of social media’s powerful influence on health behaviors, particularly among younger demographics. Health authorities now face the challenge of countering misleading health information that spreads rapidly across digital platforms and can undermine evidence-based public health messaging.

As summer approaches and tanning season begins, the HSE is intensifying efforts to educate the public about skin cancer prevention strategies, emphasizing that no tan—whether from sunbeds or natural sun exposure—is worth the potential health consequences.
