Australian Actor Guy Pearce Exits Social Media Following Controversy Over Israel Posts

Australian actor Guy Pearce has withdrawn from social media platforms after issuing an apology for sharing what he acknowledged was “misinformation and falsehoods” about Israel. The Oscar-nominated actor’s decision comes amid growing scrutiny over his online activity related to the Israel-Gaza conflict.

“It has been brought to my attention that, in my support of Palestine, I have inadvertently re-posted articles, and/or statements, that have contained misinformation and falsehoods,” Pearce told British publication Jewish News in a statement. “I am aware how sharing inaccurate content can cause confusion and distress; for this I am deeply sorry. I will certainly endeavour to be more diligent in future to verify anything I share online.”

According to Jewish News, Pearce had shared content from controversial far-right political commentator and white nationalist Nick Fuentes. The 27-year-old Fuentes is known for hosting the “America First” livestream that promotes Christian nationalism, white supremacy, misogyny, anti-LGBTQ views, and antisemitism, including Holocaust denial.

The publication also reported that Pearce shared material that blamed Israel for the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, accused Israeli officials of facilitating the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, and claimed that “the top three pornography companies are owned by Jewish people.”

In another post cited by Jewish News, Pearce reportedly shared content stating: “Remember, when Zionists tell you Islam will destroy America… While several major Las Vegas casinos/hotels that have caused gambling addictions, debt and prostitution were created and owned by Jewish Zionists… The Zionists (not Jews) want you to fear the people who stand against the corruption they are creating.”

Following significant backlash over these posts and his subsequent apology, Pearce announced his social media hiatus. “Earlier this week, I issued an apology for sharing misleading and inaccurate posts and commentary on social media,” he wrote. “To prevent any further hurt, confusion or damage to others, I will be stepping back from social media for the time being.”

Pearce has been a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights since Israel’s military operations in Gaza began following Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack. His public support for the Palestinian cause has previously attracted attention in the entertainment industry.

In May, Vanity Fair France issued its own apology after the magazine edited a photo of Pearce at the Cannes Film Festival to remove a Palestinian flag pin he was wearing. The publication acknowledged their mistake on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), writing in French: “We have published by mistake a modified version of this photo on the site. The original version was posted on Instagram the same day. We have rectified our mistake and we apologise.”

While Pearce made no public comment on the Vanity Fair controversy, he subsequently posted on X to reaffirm his support for Palestinians, ending with “SHAME on you Netanyahu. #CeaseFire #FreePalestine 🇵🇸”.

The actor’s political stance has been visible at major industry events. At this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, where he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “The Brutalist,” Pearce wore a small pin featuring a white enamel dove embossed with “Free Palestine.”

In September, he participated in the “Together For Palestine” charity show at London’s Wembley Arena, joining more than 150 artists and cultural figures to express solidarity and raise funds for the people of Gaza.

Pearce’s social media departure highlights the increasingly contentious nature of online discourse surrounding the Israel-Gaza conflict, with public figures facing intense scrutiny over their statements and positions on the issue.
