In a powerful address marking the 226th anniversary of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, Governor Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam delivered a stern warning against the spread of misinformation and hostility toward law enforcement, describing such actions as direct threats to the territory’s security and social cohesion.

The Governor’s remarks came during a thanksgiving service at the Church of God of Prophecy in Blue Hills on Sunday, where she emphasized the critical importance of supporting ongoing police reforms while rejecting divisive rhetoric.

“We must firmly reject any attempts, whether by misinformation, fear or opportunism, to incite hostility against serving officers or to sow division within our communities,” Daniel-Selvaratnam told the congregation. She connected this appeal to the territory’s cultural foundations, adding that such divisive efforts “do not reflect the Christian values of truth, neighbourly love and respect that have shaped our society for generations.”

The anniversary celebration comes at a pivotal moment for the Turks and Caicos Islands, which has been implementing significant security reforms to address rising crime concerns across the archipelago. Daniel-Selvaratnam specifically highlighted the leadership of Commissioner Fitz Bailey, who took office earlier this year in what she characterized as “a new chapter” for territorial policing.

Bailey’s appointment has brought “fortitude of leadership, vision and a deep appreciation of our regional realities,” according to the Governor, who praised the visible improvements in cooperation across various security agencies since his arrival.

The current reform agenda represents one of the most comprehensive security overhauls in the territory’s recent history. Officials have previously acknowledged challenges including resource limitations, training gaps, and the unique difficulties of policing a multi-island territory that faces both domestic crime and international trafficking concerns.

Regional cooperation forms a cornerstone of this strategy, with the Governor highlighting the importance of partnerships with neighboring countries and organizations. She specifically mentioned the deployment of officers from the Jamaica Constabulary Force, who are working alongside the TCI Regiment and the TCI Border Force in integrated security operations.

“Together, you are strengthening capacity, deepening relationships and demonstrating that partnership is the surest path to greater security and understanding for all,” the Governor noted.

Beyond external collaborations, Daniel-Selvaratnam emphasized the territory’s commitment to developing local policing talent. “We are also investing heavily in our own men and women, training, developing and equipping them to develop the long-term capability and talent pipeline of these Islands,” she said, underlining the dual approach of building domestic capacity while leveraging regional expertise.

The commemoration coincides with Police Week, themed “Unity for a Safer Tomorrow,” which the Governor described as particularly fitting given current circumstances. She emphasized that unity represents more than an abstract concept, calling it a “daily responsibility” and “a spirit defined by respect, trust and shared purpose.”

Security concerns have taken center stage in Turks and Caicos Islands politics in recent years, with violent crime affecting both residents and the vital tourism sector that drives the territory’s economy. The British Overseas Territory, known for its pristine beaches and luxury resorts, has been working to balance its reputation as a premier vacation destination with the need for enhanced security measures.

The Governor’s warning against misinformation comes amid increasing scrutiny of social media’s role in amplifying community tensions and potentially undermining police legitimacy across the Caribbean region. Law enforcement agencies throughout the area have reported challenges with public trust and cooperation, particularly in communities where historical grievances with police remain unresolved.

As the anniversary celebrations continue, the Governor’s message underscores the delicate balance between implementing necessary reforms and maintaining public support during a period of significant institutional change for the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force.
