In a significant escalation of tensions between the media and the Trump administration, independent Minneapolis journalist Georgia Fort appeared on “The Rachel Maddow Show” Monday night to discuss her recent arrest by federal authorities and warn about growing threats to press freedom in America.
Fort and fellow journalist Don Lemon were arrested Friday while covering an anti-ICE protest at a Minnesota church. Federal authorities accused both journalists of violating churchgoers’ constitutionally protected religious worship rights after protesters disrupted a service. Fort, who live-streamed her own arrest, characterized the incident as part of a broader pattern of hostility toward the press.
“I think in the last few years we’ve seen an exodus of not just Black journalists but journalists in general from mainstream media,” Fort told Maddow. She cited several concerning developments in the media landscape, including Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s reshaping of the Pentagon Press Corps, Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension last year, and the delayed release of a “60 Minutes” segment about Venezuelan detainees under CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss.
“There’s been a strategic attack on the free press for quite some time, but recently it is intensifying,” Fort explained. “To try and criminalize journalism? Journalism is not a crime and, for me, when I think about the attack that we’re currently seeing on the press, I really want the American people to understand [that] attacking the press is not simply just attacking journalists. It’s attacking the public’s right to know.”
Fort emphasized the vital role journalists play in holding powerful institutions accountable. “So often there are things that have happened with government agencies, people in power, big institutions [where] they sometimes may cover up their misdeeds,” she said. “It is the act of journalists and journalism that oftentimes reveals those truths.”
The arrest has had profound personal consequences for Fort. She described the raid, which involved nearly two dozen federal agents arriving at her home, as “traumatic” for her family. Her children have been “afraid to be alone” since the incident. “We’re trying to recover from this,” she said.
Fort also expressed concern about the spread of misinformation, pointing to AI-generated images published by the White House that misrepresented protesters’ reactions during arrests in Minneapolis. “The only way that we knew it was fake was because someone was there to document what really happened,” she noted.
“I do believe that this is an information war,” Fort continued. “The people who are standing up for truth, the people who are not afraid to document what’s happening, I think that we’re going to continue to be attacked.”
Despite these challenges, Fort has received substantial community support. “Folks have been going to my website and making contributions there, but not just to the legal fund. Folks are wanting to support my ability to continue telling [these] stories,” she shared. “This is something, I think, that definitely would probably silence a lot of journalists, and I’m committed to continuing to tell the story.”
The arrests of Fort and Lemon have raised alarms across the journalism industry about the implications for press freedom. These developments come amid broader concerns about media independence under the current administration, which has frequently characterized journalists as enemies rather than essential components of a functioning democracy.
Maddow, concluding the interview, stressed the importance of a robust response to these threats. “That attack for democracy defending itself has to be met with not just an equal-sized and equally aggressive defense of journalism and journalists,” the MSNBC anchor said, “but one that is a defense effort that, I think, is larger than the attack that engendered it in the first place.”
The targeting of journalists covering protests represents a concerning development for First Amendment advocates, who argue that the ability to report on civil unrest is fundamental to democratic oversight. As tensions between the administration and media continue to escalate, the outcome of cases like Fort’s and Lemon’s could set important precedents for press freedom in America.
