Galway Teen Meets Taoiseach as AsIAm Launches Report on Autism Misinformation

Fifteen-year-old Amy Logan from Galway was among a select group who met with Taoiseach Micheál Martin at Government Buildings last week, representing Ireland’s autistic community at the launch of a significant new report on autism awareness and misinformation.

The meeting coincided with the release of AsIAm’s “Same Chance Report 2026,” which reveals troubling statistics about the spread of misinformation regarding autism in Ireland. According to the findings, nearly seven in ten (68%) autistic individuals and their families believe that misinformation about autism has increased over the past year.

Amy, who serves on AsIAm’s Autistic Youth Advisory Panel, joined the organization’s leadership team for a special meet-and-greet with the Taoiseach. During the meeting, they discussed the pressing challenges facing Ireland’s autistic community and emphasized the importance of implementing the government’s promised National Autism Strategy through legislation.

The teen has been actively involved with AsIAm’s community initiatives. Just last month, she participated in the launch of the organization’s new Community Support Hub in Galway. This facility is part of an expanding network of regional centers designed to provide localized information, advocacy resources, and support services for autistic people and their families throughout Ireland.

AsIAm CEO Adam Harris, who led the delegation, highlighted the growing concern about autism misinformation, particularly as misleading content continues to proliferate online both domestically and internationally. The report indicates that recent global debates have exacerbated confusion and stigma faced by autistic individuals and their families.

“The spread of misinformation about autism doesn’t just create confusion—it actively harms autistic people by reinforcing stereotypes and creating barriers to inclusion,” Harris explained during the launch event. “Our report highlights the urgent need for evidence-based information and positive representation.”

The timing of the report’s release is particularly significant as communities across Ireland prepare to participate in the annual Same Chance Walk for Autism this Sunday. A major walk is scheduled to take place at the scenic Kylemore Abbey in Connemara, with numerous smaller community walks organized nationwide. These events encourage public solidarity with autistic individuals and their families while raising essential funds for AsIAm’s ongoing work.

The regional Community Support Hub in Galway represents a crucial development in AsIAm’s strategy to provide more accessible services throughout the country. The hub offers specialized support tailored to local needs, including information services, advocacy assistance, and community-building initiatives. This decentralized approach acknowledges the importance of localized support networks that understand the specific challenges faced by autistic people in different regions.

During the meeting with the Taoiseach, discussions centered on the government’s commitment to develop and implement a comprehensive National Autism Strategy, which would coordinate services across education, healthcare, employment, and community inclusion. Advocates emphasized that such legislation is essential to address the systemic barriers that autistic people continue to face in Irish society.

The Same Chance Report 2026 also examines broader issues affecting Ireland’s autistic community, including access to diagnosis, educational supports, mental health services, and employment opportunities. It provides evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, educators, healthcare providers, and community organizations.

“Having young advocates like Amy involved in these discussions is vital,” said a spokesperson for AsIAm. “They bring authentic perspectives that help shape policies and programs that will directly impact their futures and the lives of all autistic people in Ireland.”

As communities prepare for Sunday’s nationwide walk, organizers hope the event will not only raise funds but also increase public awareness about autism and counter harmful misinformation with factual, respectful representation of the autistic experience.
