French Navy Debunks Pakistani Media Claims About Indian Air Force Defeat

Pakistan faced a significant diplomatic embarrassment on Sunday after the French Navy forcefully refuted claims published by Pakistani media regarding India’s military capabilities during the May 2025 conflict. The French authorities described the reports as “extensive misinformation” and “fake news.”

The controversy erupted when Pakistan’s Geo TV published an article claiming that French commander Captain Jaquis Launay had confirmed Pakistan’s air superiority over India during Operation Sindoor. The report further alleged that Pakistan Air Force was “better prepared” than their Indian counterparts and suggested that Indian Rafale fighter jets were downed not because of any technological advantage of Chinese J-10C fighters.

In a swift and unambiguous response, the French Navy categorically denied these assertions. “These statements were attributed to Captain Launay who never gave his consent for any form of publication. The article contains extensive misinformation and disinformation,” the French Navy stated in their official communication.

The French authorities pointed out several factual errors in the Pakistani media report, including the commander’s first name, which is Yvan, not Jacquis. “Contrary to what has been established in the article, his responsibilities are limited to commanding the organic naval air station where the French Rafale Marine aircraft are stationed,” the French Navy clarified.

The Navy further emphasized that when questioned about Operation Sindoor, Captain Launay “neither confirmed nor denied that Indian aircraft had been shot down” and “refused to comment on possible jamming of the Indian Rafale by Chinese systems.” They also stated that the commander never referenced the Chinese J-10 fighter jets, directly contradicting claims made in the Pakistani media report.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism online, with many observers condemning what they characterized as deliberate anti-India propaganda. BJP leader Amit Malviya weighed in on the controversy, describing it as evidence of “Pakistan’s desperate misinformation machinery.”

“When official institutions start debunking their propaganda, you know how desperate Pakistan’s misinformation machinery has become,” Malviya wrote, highlighting the French Navy’s public refutation of Geo TV’s claims.

The controversy takes place against the backdrop of Operation Sindoor, a military action launched by India against Pakistan in May in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives. According to Indian sources, the operation inflicted significant damage on Pakistani military installations before both sides agreed to a ceasefire at Islamabad’s request.

During the brief but intense military engagement between May 9-10, Indian forces reportedly targeted nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, resulting in approximately 100 terrorist casualties. The Indian Air Force also conducted strikes against 13 Pakistani airbases and military installations.

In October, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh stated that Pakistan had lost between 12 and 13 aircraft during the conflict, including American-made F-16s and Chinese-origin JF-17s, due to precision strikes conducted by the Indian Air Force both on the ground and in aerial combat.

This latest media controversy underscores the ongoing information warfare that often accompanies military tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, with international third parties increasingly finding themselves drawn into regional disputes through misrepresentation and unsubstantiated claims in national media.

The French Navy’s unusual step of publicly refuting such claims highlights the diplomatic sensitivities surrounding military equipment sales and operational capabilities in the South Asian region, where France has become a major defense partner for India through the sale of Rafale fighter jets and other military hardware.
