French Navy Condemns Pakistani Media’s False Claims About Operation Sindoor

The French Navy has publicly denounced what it described as a “misinformation campaign” by Pakistani media regarding India’s Operation Sindoor, forcefully rejecting fabricated claims about Indian Rafale jets being shot down during a border confrontation earlier this year.

In a strongly worded statement posted on its official X account, the Marine Nationale labeled the Pakistani media report as “FAKENEWS” and clarified that comments attributed to a French naval officer had been entirely fabricated.

“These statements were attributed to Captain Launay who never gave his consent for any form of publication. The article contains extensive misinformation and disinformation,” the French Navy stated in its rebuttal.

The controversy began when Pakistani broadcaster Geo TV published a report on November 21 quoting an officer it identified as “Jacques Launay,” who allegedly praised the Pakistan Air Force during a supposed May 6-7 aerial engagement. The report claimed this engagement involved over 140 fighter aircraft and resulted in Indian Rafale jets being shot down with Chinese support.

Setting the record straight, the French Navy clarified that the officer’s actual name is Captain Yvan Launay, not Jacques, and that none of the statements attributed to him were authentic. The Navy emphasized that Captain Launay’s role is limited to commanding the naval air station where French Rafale Marine aircraft are based.

“Contrary to what has been established in the article, his responsibilities are limited to commanding the organic naval air station where the French Rafale Marine aircraft are stationed,” the statement explained.

The Navy further noted that Captain Launay’s presentation at the Indo-Pacific conference was purely technical in nature, focusing on “the assets of his naval air base, the missions of the Rafale fighter jet, and the French carrier strike group concept.”

During question-and-answer sessions at the event, the French Navy confirmed that Captain Launay “neither confirmed nor denied that Indian aircraft had been shot down” during Operation Sindoor and “refused to comment on possible jamming of the Indian Rafale by Chinese systems.” The statement specifically emphasized that “he never mentioned the Chinese J10,” directly contradicting another claim in the Pakistani media report.

The French response comes shortly after the US-China Economic and Review Commission published a report exposing how China launched a “disinformation campaign” following Operation Sindoor. According to the US report, this campaign aimed to “hinder the sales of French Rafale aircraft in favor of its own J-35s.” The effort reportedly involved using fake social media accounts to distribute AI-generated images purporting to show debris from Rafale jets allegedly destroyed by Chinese weapons.

Operation Sindoor was launched by India in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians. The operation targeted sites allegedly linked to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.

This incident highlights the growing concern about misinformation in regional conflicts and its potential impact on international defense relationships. The French-built Rafale fighter jets represent a significant defense partnership between France and India, with the aircraft forming a crucial component of India’s military modernization efforts.

The swift and direct response from the French Navy underscores the seriousness with which France views attempts to spread misinformation about its defense technology and the operational capabilities of its military hardware.
