French authorities launched a new initiative this week to combat what they describe as a surge in economic misinformation circulating online, particularly on social media platforms where misleading claims about taxes, public spending, and purchasing power have proliferated.

The Economy Ministry unveiled “Bercy Decodes” on Monday, a fact-checking program designed to provide verified information to counter false economic narratives that officials say have increased “exponentially” in recent months. The initiative will leverage multiple digital platforms to reach French citizens across various demographics.

“We have observed in recent months an exponential increase in disinformation on economic subjects, but also in half-truths,” said a ministry source who requested anonymity. The official explained that many misleading claims manipulate legitimate data that becomes “twisted and ends up being erroneous.”

According to reporting by the daily newspaper Le Parisien, the program will produce educational content across established social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn. The ministry has also recently launched a TikTok account, recognizing the platform’s growing importance, especially among younger audiences.

Ministry officials reported that approximately one-third of economic and fiscal content on TikTok contains inaccuracies, making it a priority platform for their counter-misinformation efforts. The April launch of the TikTok account represents a strategic move to engage directly with users where misleading content spreads most rapidly.

Recent examples of economic misinformation cited by the ministry include false claims about taxation requirements for personal gifts and exaggerated estimates regarding the costs of France’s long-term energy planning. Such misinformation can lead to public confusion about government policies and economic realities.

The initiative comes at a sensitive time in France’s political calendar, with presidential elections on the horizon. Economic issues typically feature prominently in French electoral debates, making accurate information crucial for voters.

“We cannot allow falsehoods to spread,” the ministry source emphasized. “We deal with everyday issues affecting the French public, such as banking, energy, purchasing power and taxation. We cannot lose the bond of trust with our citizens. It’s a matter of democracy.”

“Bercy Decodes” is not France’s first institutional fact-checking effort. The initiative follows similar government programs such as “Canal Detox,” launched by the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research to address health misinformation, and the establishment of Viginum, a specialized agency focused on countering foreign digital interference in French democratic processes.

President Emmanuel Macron has previously advocated for stronger measures to combat online misinformation, including expedited legal procedures to remove harmful content and a potential media accreditation system to help citizens distinguish between reliable information sources and platforms driven primarily by advertising revenue.

The initiative reflects growing concern among governments worldwide about the societal impact of misinformation. France’s approach combines institutional authority with digital engagement strategies to reach citizens across multiple platforms.

Economic misinformation poses particular challenges as financial topics often involve complex data and policies that can be easily misrepresented. By combining written analyses with short-form videos, the Economy Ministry hopes to make accurate economic information more accessible and engaging for the public.

The success of “Bercy Decodes” will likely depend on its ability to present verifiable information in formats that can effectively compete with the often more sensationalist misinformation circulating online, while maintaining public trust in its objectivity as an official government source.
