Power Minister Adelabu Denounces False Statement About Personal Wealth

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has forcefully rejected claims attributed to him in which he allegedly boasted about having “accumulated enough money to never be broke again.” In a statement released Monday, the minister described the attribution as completely fabricated and part of what appears to be an orchestrated campaign to damage his reputation.

The statement, issued through his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, emphasized that Adelabu never made such remarks in any forum, public or private. The minister urged the public to disregard the fabricated statement entirely.

“This false attribution represents a deliberate attempt to mislead Nigerians and tarnish the minister’s image,” Tunji said in the statement. “Chief Adelabu has always maintained the highest standards of professionalism and would never make such inappropriate claims about personal wealth.”

This incident comes on the heels of another recent misinformation attempt when a fake resignation letter purportedly from Adelabu circulated online. The minister’s office quickly debunked that document as well, noting the timing suggests a coordinated effort to undermine his credibility.

“This is not an isolated attack,” the statement continued. “It is part of a sustained effort to malign the person and office of the Honourable Minister through the spread of fake news and deliberate falsehoods.”

Political observers note that the timing of these attacks coincides with speculation about Adelabu’s political aspirations. Sources close to the minister indicate he may be considering a run for the governorship of Oyo State under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner, which could explain the motivation behind the disinformation campaign.

The Power Ministry has been under intense public scrutiny in recent months as Nigeria continues to grapple with electricity generation and distribution challenges. The country’s power sector has long been plagued by infrastructure deficits, with many regions experiencing frequent outages and limited access to reliable electricity.

Since taking office, Adelabu has embarked on several initiatives aimed at improving the power situation, including efforts to enhance generation capacity and strengthen the national grid. The minister has also been vocal about the need for greater investment in Nigeria’s power infrastructure to support economic growth and development.

Media analysts suggest that public figures in Nigeria increasingly face challenges from disinformation campaigns, particularly as the country’s digital media landscape expands. The spread of false information through social media platforms has become a significant concern, with political figures often targeted during periods of heightened political activity.

Communication experts warn that such fabricated statements can significantly impact public perception if not promptly addressed. “In today’s digital environment, misinformation can spread rapidly and cause considerable damage before corrections can catch up,” said Dr. Emmanuel Oladipo, a communications specialist at the University of Lagos.

The minister has called on Nigerians to exercise caution when consuming information online and to rely on verified and credible sources. He also emphasized the importance of fact-checking before sharing content on social media platforms.

As Nigeria approaches another election cycle, political tensions are expected to rise, potentially leading to more instances of targeted misinformation. Media literacy advocates are calling for greater awareness about the dangers of sharing unverified information and its potential impact on democratic processes.

Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, was appointed Minister of Power by President Bola Tinubu in 2023. His tenure has been marked by efforts to address Nigeria’s persistent electricity challenges amidst complex economic conditions.
