Nigerian Government Calls for Unified Approach to Combat Misinformation

Nigeria’s Federal Government has issued a call for enhanced collaboration between media organizations, public institutions, and other stakeholders to address the escalating challenge of misinformation and disinformation across the country.

The appeal came from Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, during an event in Abuja commemorating World Press Freedom Day. Idris emphasized that tackling the spread of false information requires coordinated efforts from all sectors to protect public trust and maintain national stability.

“Press freedom remains a fundamental right guaranteed by our Constitution,” the minister stated, while reaffirming the government’s dedication to creating a secure and supportive environment for journalists to operate in. He specifically condemned any form of harassment, intimidation, or violence directed at media professionals.

The minister outlined several ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing transparency in government operations, including more robust media engagement strategies, better implementation of Freedom of Information frameworks, and various partnerships designed to foster responsible journalism practices throughout the country.

One significant development highlighted during the event was the government’s collaboration with UNESCO to establish the International Media and Information Literacy Institute in Abuja. This institution aims to strengthen citizens’ critical thinking skills and their ability to evaluate information in today’s complex digital landscape.

Binyerem Ukaire, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, noted that the commemoration provided a valuable opportunity to address the challenges created by rapidly evolving information technologies and platforms. She particularly emphasized the spread of misinformation as a pressing concern requiring immediate attention.

“We need coordinated institutional responses and stronger partnerships across sectors to rebuild public trust and promote responsible media practices,” Ukaire stated during the event.

Nigeria’s media landscape has faced growing challenges in recent years, with social media platforms accelerating the spread of unverified information. This phenomenon has occasionally fueled social tensions and complicated government efforts to communicate effectively during crises.

Representatives from various security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, were also present at the commemoration. These agencies pledged their support for press freedom principles and committed to enhancing protections for journalists working across the country.

Nigeria ranks 123rd out of 180 countries on the 2023 World Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by media practitioners in the country. While this represents an improvement over previous years, concerns persist about journalist safety and occasional government interference in media operations.

The government reiterated its commitment to working collaboratively with media organizations, civil society groups, and international partners to strengthen Nigeria’s information ecosystem. Officials stressed that such partnerships are essential for supporting democratic governance and ensuring citizens have access to reliable information.

Media experts attending the event welcomed the government’s stance but called for concrete actions beyond rhetoric. They emphasized that protecting press freedom requires legal reforms, institutional support for independent journalism, and consistent enforcement of existing protections for media workers.

As Africa’s most populous nation continues to navigate complex social and political challenges, the quality of public information remains critical to national development and democratic consolidation. The government’s recognition of this fact, through its call for multi-stakeholder collaboration, represents an important acknowledgment of the central role that credible media plays in Nigeria’s future.
