Federal Government Calls for Unified Front Against Misinformation
The Nigerian Federal Government has issued an urgent call for enhanced collaboration between media organizations, government institutions, and other stakeholders to address the growing threat of disinformation and misinformation across the country. This appeal was made by Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, during a commemoration of the 2026 World Press Freedom Day held at Radio House in Abuja.
“This administration has prioritised collaboration with media stakeholders and international partners to promote responsible journalism, counter disinformation and misinformation,” Idris stated during the event.
The minister emphasized that press freedom remains a constitutional right in Nigeria, reaffirming the government’s dedication to safeguarding this freedom while encouraging responsible media practices. “The Federal Government fully recognises press freedom as a fundamental right and remains committed to fostering an environment where the media can operate freely, safely, and responsibly, in accordance with democratic principles and the rule of law,” he declared.
Idris took a firm stance against the harassment of media professionals, condemning “all forms of intimidation, unlawful harassment, or attacks against journalists.” He warned that a media environment where journalists cannot work safely ultimately undermines democratic institutions.
The minister highlighted initiatives undertaken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to enhance transparency and information accessibility. These efforts include sustained engagement with media outlets, proper implementation of the Freedom of Information Act, and significant investment in public communication platforms.
A notable achievement mentioned by Idris was Nigeria’s partnership with UNESCO to establish the International Media and Information Literacy Institute in Abuja. He described this as a “pioneering initiative” that demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening media literacy, empowering citizens to critically evaluate information, and promoting responsible communication in today’s digital landscape.
While championing press freedom, Idris also called on journalists to maintain high ethical standards, emphasizing that freedom must be balanced with responsibility. “The true test of press freedom lies not in our declarations, but in our actions, how safely journalists can do their work, how truthfully information is shared, and how responsibly it is consumed,” he noted.
Dr. Binyerem Ukaire, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, added her voice to the discussion, characterizing the event as a platform for strengthening institutional collaboration and addressing challenges within Nigeria’s information ecosystem. She emphasized that the gathering reflected a shared commitment to bolstering press freedom and creating a more informed and inclusive society.
Ukaire specifically addressed the challenges posed by digital transformation, noting that “the expansion of digital platforms has introduced new complexities that require coordinated institutional responses, especially in addressing misinformation and strengthening public trust.” She assured attendees that the ministry remains dedicated to fostering dialogue, strengthening partnerships, and enhancing professionalism in the media sector.
The commemoration attracted representatives from key national institutions, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigerian Press Council, and UNESCO. This broad attendance underscores the cross-sectoral recognition of the importance of press freedom and the collective responsibility in combating misinformation.
The government’s initiative comes at a critical time when digital platforms have dramatically altered how information is created and consumed globally, presenting unique challenges for Nigeria’s media landscape. As one of Africa’s largest democracies, Nigeria’s approach to balancing press freedom with the fight against misinformation could set important precedents for other nations facing similar challenges across the continent.
