Family Fights Against Misinformation Following Puyallup Shooting

In Pierce County, loved ones gather to honor the life of Tyriek Patterson, a single father who was fatally shot one week ago at a townhome in Puyallup, Washington.

The suspect, Moses Karovsky, turned himself in to authorities after the incident. On Friday, a judge set bail at $500,000 as legal proceedings begin in the case.

Since Patterson’s death, friends have expressed concern about misinformation circulating within the community. According to court records, Patterson picked up a friend shortly after 4 a.m. on April 12 and went to the home of a woman who investigators initially claimed shared a child with Patterson. Ray McConico, Patterson’s best friend who witnessed the tragic incident, clarified that the woman was actually Patterson’s girlfriend and they did not have children together. Beyond this correction, McConico preferred to focus on celebrating his friend’s life rather than discussing the details of that night.

“He was a great friend, a hard worker, you feel me, a great sibling, he’ll take his shirt off and give it to anybody,” McConico said, describing Patterson’s generous nature and strong character.

Meemee Thrnglulay, who was Patterson’s manager, shared similar sentiments about the victim. “He just had such a big personality, and all he cared about was his children,” she said. “Even if you wasn’t blood, he’ll definitely call you, he cares, he’ll say hey we’re family now and that’s how we look at him as family, it’s past friendship.”

Thrnglulay added that Patterson was well-known throughout Tacoma, and many in the community remain in shock over his sudden death. “He was like a big teddy bear, he knew how to make you laugh,” she recalled, highlighting the positive impact he had on those around him.

The loss has deeply affected McConico, who described Patterson as his “twin flame,” noting that their daughters played together regularly. When asked about Patterson’s two children, McConico said simply, “One can only assume they feel lost.” He described the grieving process as surreal, with friends and family still trying to process the tragedy.

This shooting adds to growing concerns about gun violence in Pierce County, where local law enforcement has been working to address an uptick in violent crime over the past year. Community advocates have been calling for more resources to address root causes of violence, particularly in cases involving disputes that escalate to deadly confrontations.
