Nigeria’s information space faces alarming threats as the country approaches the 2027 general elections, according to a recent warning from the Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC). The organization has highlighted the growing spread of fake news, misinformation, political tension, and insecurity as significant concerns that could undermine the electoral process.

In response to these challenges, a coalition of government agencies and civil society organizations has established the National Crisis Communication Hub (CCHub). The initiative brings together the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), and various civil society organizations to strengthen coordinated information management during emergencies and crises.

Major General Chris Olukolade (Rtd), Chairman of the CCC, revealed that the organization’s latest media monitoring report shows a worrying rise in insecurity-related narratives and political tension across digital platforms. The study utilized PRrev, an AI-driven media monitoring and social listening tool that tracks conversations across multiple social media platforms, online news sources, and diaspora-based forums.

“Our analysis indicates that many Nigerians are increasingly expressing fear over insecurity, frustration with leadership, and mixed support for government actions,” Olukolade explained. These sentiments, he noted, are often amplified by both factual reports and deliberate misinformation campaigns.

The report identified several troubling trends that could potentially impact the 2027 electoral process. These include the rapid spread of fake news, increasingly sophisticated forged documents, and a rise in politically motivated disinformation. Private messaging platforms like WhatsApp have become particular concerns, as they serve as major channels for misinformation that is difficult to detect and counter.

Communication gaps during crisis situations were also highlighted as problematic. Delays or unclear official statements often create vacuums that rumor and speculation quickly fill, further complicating crisis management efforts and undermining public trust.

The newly established CCHub will function as an independent, multi-stakeholder coordination platform for managing information during emergencies. According to Olukolade, it will focus on detecting and countering fake news in real time, supporting communication across all levels of government, and strengthening public confidence in official information sources.

“The hub will not function as a censorship body,” Olukolade emphasized, “but as a collaborative platform bringing together government agencies, media organisations, civil society, and technology partners to ensure accurate and timely information reaches the public.”

The initiative has drawn broad support from key national security and information management stakeholders. Participants include NITDA, the Nigeria Police Force, Defence Headquarters, the Department of State Services, EFCC, the National Emergency Management Agency, and various media organizations including the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers.

To address the identified challenges, the CCC has recommended a multi-pronged approach: timely and coordinated crisis communication, stronger fact-checking mechanisms, improved collaboration among stakeholders, and increased public awareness campaigns to help citizens identify and resist misinformation.

The timing of this initiative is particularly significant as Nigeria begins preparations for the 2027 general elections. Political activities are already intensifying, and without robust crisis communication systems in place, the electoral process could be vulnerable to manipulation through misinformation campaigns.

“The CCC remains committed to supporting efforts that promote accurate information, responsible communication, and national unity,” Olukolade affirmed, underscoring the importance of preserving public trust and maintaining national stability during the crucial pre-election period.

The establishment of the CCHub represents a proactive step in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against misinformation, particularly as digital platforms continue to evolve and present new challenges for information integrity and democratic processes.
