UP Police to Take Action Against Social Media Accounts Spreading Misinformation About Factory Protests

Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have launched a crackdown on social media accounts spreading misinformation about recent factory worker protests in Gautam Budh Nagar district, officials announced Monday.

The police have already filed two First Information Reports (FIRs) against social media handles for sharing unverified videos and information related to the ongoing labor unrest. A specialized team has been established to monitor platforms including X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and Instagram for further violations.

“To discourage spread of false and unverified information about the incident, we have decided to identify those accounts where some people are sharing unverified videos and information,” said Dr. RN Mishra, Joint Commissioner of Police, Gautam Budh Nagar. “More FIRs will be filed against those found violating the law.”

The enforcement action comes amid heightened tensions in the industrial district, where authorities have already arrested “at least three dozen people involved in the agitation in multiple incidents,” according to Mishra.

In a parallel effort to maintain industrial peace, the district administration has established a dedicated helpline urging citizens to report suspicious social media content. Residents can now alert authorities about potentially harmful posts through the newly established control room.

District Magistrate Medha Roopam emphasized that workers who wish to continue their duties should not face impediments. She directed factory management to “establish cordial communication with workers and provide proper information in line with government guidelines.”

The administration has also mandated that all factories maintain operational CCTV cameras at their main gates to ensure worker safety and facilitate timely intervention if needed. This measure aims to protect both workers and industrial assets while allowing for visual documentation of any incidents.

“The district administration will work in an impartial, transparent and sensitive manner to protect the interests of all parties, ensuring industrial activities in the district continue smoothly, safely and in an orderly manner,” Roopam stated.

To address immediate concerns, district officials convened a high-level meeting with industry leaders in Sector 6. The gathering included prominent figures such as Noida Entrepreneurs Association President Vipin Malhan and Noida Apparel Export Cluster President Lalit Thukral, alongside senior administrative officials including Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh and CEO Krishna Karunesh.

Participating virtually, Uttar Pradesh’s Principal Secretary for Labor MKS Sundaram emphasized the state government’s commitment to protecting both worker and entrepreneur interests under India’s new labor codes.

“These include guaranteed minimum wage, timely and full wage payment, equal pay for equal work, extra payment for overtime, regulation of working hours, prohibition of exploitation, social security (EPF and ESI), gratuity, and extending social security coverage to unorganised and gig workers,” Sundaram detailed.

He further outlined protections including job security, compensation for retrenchment, advance notice requirements, workplace safety standards, weekly holidays, and special provisions for female workers. Sundaram promised “strict action” against any exploitation.

The industrial unrest comes at a sensitive time for Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, which has been working to position itself as a business-friendly destination. The Gautam Budh Nagar district, which includes Noida and Greater Noida, houses numerous manufacturing facilities and has emerged as a crucial industrial hub in the National Capital Region.

Labor Commissioner Markandey Shahi urged all stakeholders to rely exclusively on official sources of information and avoid spreading rumors or unverified content on social media platforms.

The control room established for industrial units and workers can be reached at phone numbers 1202978231, 1202978232, 1202978862, and 1202978702 for immediate assistance. Officials have promised prompt action on any concerns reported through these channels.

Well said. Tackling root causes through open communication is crucial, rather than solely relying on heavy-handed policing. Transparency and good-faith negotiations would be a wiser approach.

Misinformation can certainly exacerbate labor tensions, but a heavy-handed response could backfire. I hope the authorities pursue a measured approach that respects workers’ rights while maintaining public order.
