In the chaotic hours following gunshots at the Washington Hilton, where the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner was being held on April 25, confusion and misinformation spread rapidly across social media platforms and news outlets as authorities worked to determine what had occurred at an event attended by President Donald Trump.

The incident, which took place in the same building but not the same room as the president, immediately raised serious security concerns nearly two years after Trump survived two separate assassination attempts. According to preliminary reports, the suspect was identified by several news organizations as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, though authorities had not officially confirmed his identity as of early afternoon on April 26.

A suspect was taken into police custody and was expected to face charges including assault of a federal officer and discharging a firearm, with additional charges possible. The individual was scheduled to be arraigned on April 27.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” revealed that the suspect had traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago and then to Washington, D.C. Notably, the Washington Hilton is the same location where John Hinckley Jr. shot President Ronald Reagan in 1981, adding a disturbing historical parallel to the incident.

“We believe this was targeting administration officials,” Blanche stated, while emphasizing the investigation remained “quite preliminary.” When asked specifically about whether Trump himself was targeted, Blanche added, “We’re still looking into that… But it does appear that he did in fact set out to target folks that work in the administration, likely including the president.”

In the aftermath of the shooting, social media became flooded with conspiracy theories and misinformation. One widespread falsehood involved White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt’s pre-event interview with Fox News, where she stated, “There will be some shots fired tonight in the room.” Some social media users suggested this indicated foreknowledge of the attack. In reality, Leavitt was referring to Trump’s planned speech, which was expected to contain pointed jokes, not actual violence.

Another area of confusion involved the apprehension of the suspect. Despite social media claims questioning whether the shooter had been shot, authorities confirmed the suspect was tackled, not shot. Jeffery W. Carroll, interim Metropolitan Police Department chief, stated at a news conference that at approximately 8:36 p.m. Eastern Time, an armed individual charged through a Secret Service checkpoint in the hotel lobby carrying a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives. Secret Service agents intercepted the person and exchanged gunfire, but “the suspect in this case, he was not struck by gunfire,” Carroll clarified.

Trump later reported that one officer was shot at close range but was saved by his bulletproof vest. “I just spoke to the officer and he’s doing great,” Trump stated during a press conference following the incident.

Misinformation also spread regarding a brief video clip showing a man standing next to Trump holding up a card moments before shots were heard. Some online posts suggested this indicated the shooting was pre-planned. In reality, the man was Oz Pearlman, a scheduled performer at the dinner. Pearlman told CNN’s “State of the Union” that he was performing a mentalist trick for the Trumps and Leavitt at that precise moment. According to ABC’s Jonathan Karl, Pearlman was guessing the name of Leavitt’s unborn baby as part of his act.

Similarly, a clipped call from Fox News reporter Aishah Hasnie led to unfounded speculation. In the fragment, Hasnie mentioned that Leavitt’s husband had told her to “be very safe” before the call abruptly ended. Hasnie later clarified on social media that the call dropped due to poor cell service, and that Leavitt’s husband was simply expressing general concern for her safety as a journalist.

As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to release more details about the suspect’s motivations and how security was breached at an event attended by the president and numerous high-ranking officials.
