Fact Check: Debunking Viral Misinformation Surrounding Dhurandhar 2 and Recent Events

False information continues to circulate across social media platforms, with several viral posts this week attempting to link fabricated content to Ranveer Singh’s recently released film Dhurandhar 2 and other current events. Independent fact-checkers have identified multiple instances of manipulated media and misleading claims gaining traction online.

An AI-generated image purporting to show the Dhurandhar 2 cast—including Sanjay Dutt, Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, and R Madhavan—visiting the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has been widely shared on social platforms. Despite the convincing appearance of the image, fact-checkers have confirmed it is entirely computer-generated with no basis in reality. No credible news sources or official social media accounts have reported any such visit by the film’s cast members.

This marks one of several false claims surrounding the film that have emerged since its release. In another incident, social media users shared footage of a massive crowd outside a cinema hall, suggesting it demonstrated “unprecedented craze” for Dhurandhar 2. Investigation revealed the video actually showed crowds gathering for a screening of Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 in August 2023, months before Dhurandhar 2’s release.

The fabrication of content related to high-profile Bollywood releases has become increasingly common, with filmmakers and actors often having to contend with false narratives surrounding their projects.

In a separate incident unrelated to the film industry, a scripted video was shared with claims that it showed a Muslim man caught pretending to be disabled while begging in a Hindu-majority village. Fact-checkers traced the video to its original source—a Facebook page known for creating staged social-awareness content—confirming the footage was scripted rather than a genuine incident.

Communal tensions have also been exploited through misinformation. Following the murder of Tarun Kumar during Holi celebrations in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area, a video circulated showing crowds with saffron flags marching through streets. The footage was presented as evidence of Hindu gatherings in Uttam Nagar on Eid in response to Kumar’s death. However, fact-checkers determined the video actually originated from Karnataka and was unrelated to the Delhi incident.

The pattern of repurposing old footage to support narratives about current events extended to international news as well. A video claiming to show gunfire near the Saudi royal palace in Riyadh amid ongoing tensions in West Asia was identified as old footage with no connection to recent developments in the region.

Media literacy experts point to these examples as part of a growing trend where visual media is manipulated, fabricated or presented out of context to reinforce particular narratives or generate engagement online. The increasing sophistication of AI-generated imagery has made this problem more acute, as fake images become increasingly difficult to distinguish from authentic ones.

Social media platforms continue to grapple with the rapid spread of such misinformation, while fact-checking organizations work to verify viral content and provide accurate context for public consumption.

Authorities have repeatedly urged social media users to verify information through multiple reliable sources before sharing content, particularly during sensitive events or situations that could potentially inflame community tensions.
