Digital Media Evolution Raises Misinformation Concerns, Experts Warn

Media experts have issued a stark warning about the growing risks of misinformation and disinformation in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape. The caution came during a symposium organized by Open African Tribune in Lagos on Thursday, where industry professionals gathered to discuss the changing face of journalism.

The event, titled “Citizen Journalism in the Age of the Algorithm,” brought together prominent media figures to examine how technological advancements—particularly artificial intelligence, algorithms, and social media platforms—are fundamentally transforming news production and distribution channels across Africa and beyond.

Naakuu Paul-Birabi, Editor-in-Chief of Open African Tribune, explained that the forum aimed to enhance understanding of digital information flow among both journalists and the general public. “Citizen journalism has expanded participation in news production, but it also increases the risk of misinformation if verification is ignored,” Paul-Birabi noted during his address. He emphasized that “algorithms now shape what people see, so journalists must prioritize accuracy and verification.”

The rise of citizen journalism—where ordinary individuals capture and share news events through smartphones and social media—has democratized information sharing but created new challenges for the media industry. Without traditional editorial oversight and fact-checking processes, inaccurate or misleading content can quickly gain traction online.

Fisayo Soyombo, founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, delivered a compelling argument against measuring journalistic success through metrics like popularity or viral reach. “Journalism should not be judged by virality but by its commitment to truth and public interest,” Soyombo stated. He cautioned that “the moment popularity becomes the metric, misinformation gains ground.”

This concern reflects broader industry trends, as news organizations increasingly struggle with the tension between generating engagement and maintaining journalistic integrity. The algorithmic nature of social media platforms often rewards sensational content that provokes strong emotions rather than nuanced, factual reporting.

Tolulope Adelera-Balogun, Director of Programmes at News Central, reinforced the importance of thorough verification in the digital age. She advised journalists to use social media as an information-gathering tool rather than a replacement for professional standards. “Social media is a useful tool for gathering leads, but it cannot replace professional journalism,” she noted.

Media literacy emerged as another critical focus during the symposium. Maryann Duke Okon emphasized the need for audiences to develop critical evaluation skills when consuming online information. As the volume of content continues to explode across digital platforms, the ability to distinguish credible sources from unreliable ones becomes increasingly vital for informed citizenship.

The symposium comes at a pivotal moment for African media, which faces unique challenges in balancing technological innovation with journalistic responsibility. Across the continent, smartphone penetration and social media usage continue to rise dramatically, creating both opportunities and risks for information dissemination.

For established media organizations like Open African Tribune and News Central, adapting to this changing landscape while maintaining editorial standards presents an ongoing challenge. The event highlighted the need for continued professional development and industry collaboration to address these evolving concerns.

As algorithms increasingly determine what content reaches audiences, the symposium underscored the importance of maintaining human judgment and ethical considerations in journalism. The consensus among participants was clear: while technology has transformed how news is gathered and distributed, the fundamental principles of accuracy, verification, and public service remain essential to responsible journalism.
