In a bid to ease growing tensions in Manipur, authorities have issued an urgent appeal for public restraint following violent clashes triggered by a drug seizure operation that injured 18 civilians and led to the burning of security vehicles.
State Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh on Wednesday called on residents to avoid spreading unverified information that could further inflame the already volatile situation in Bishnupur district, where violence erupted Tuesday after a major drug bust at Imphal’s Bir Tikendrajit International Airport.

The incident began when a joint security operation involving the Central Industrial Security Force, Assam Rifles, and state forces apprehended Mohammad Sabir Ahamed at the airport. Security personnel discovered approximately 6.74 kg of suspected brown sugar hidden inside six containers in his checked luggage.
During questioning, Ahamed, who resides in Moirang sub-division of Bishnupur district, reportedly revealed additional drug caches and weapons stored in Kwakta village. Assam Rifles personnel in plain clothes then escorted the suspect toward the location.
The situation escalated when local women conducting vehicle inspections stopped the security team. According to Singh, a misunderstanding occurred when residents suspected the vehicle contained “members of a particular community,” triggering confusion that quickly spiraled into violence.
“A mob began attacking the team, resulting in injuries to several individuals including five women. Amid the chaos, two security vehicles were set ablaze, further intensifying unrest in the area,” Singh explained.
Security reinforcements, including Assam Rifles and Manipur Rifles commandos, rushed to conduct rescue operations. Local volunteers and community groups also assisted in evacuation efforts that helped bring the situation temporarily under control.
Singh noted with particular concern that Tuesday’s incident reportedly involved armed cadres, raising serious security issues in the region. “Authorities are working to identify those responsible and ensure swift action is taken against them,” he said.
The incident has prompted a significant security response, with state forces, central paramilitary units, and army personnel deployed throughout the affected areas.
