Manipur Government Urges Public to Avoid Misinformation as Violence Erupts After Drug Seizure
The Manipur government issued an urgent appeal Wednesday asking residents to refrain from spreading misinformation that could further inflame tensions in the northeastern state, which has been grappling with a fragile security situation.
State Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh specifically called for public cooperation in restoring peace following a violent incident in Bishnupur district that left 18 civilians injured, including five women, and resulted in two security vehicles being set ablaze.
The violence erupted Tuesday following what authorities described as a significant drug seizure operation at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal. Security forces apprehended a suspected drug peddler, identified as Mohammad Sabir Ahamed, after discovering approximately 6.74 kg of suspected brown sugar concealed inside six containers in his luggage.
“The situation in Bishnupur district has remained tense since Tuesday following this unfortunate incident, which has further aggravated unrest in the area,” Singh told reporters during a media briefing attended by three Members of the Legislative Assembly.
According to officials, the joint operation involved the Central Industrial Security Force, Assam Rifles, and state forces acting on specific intelligence. During interrogation, Ahamed, a resident of Moirang sub-division in Bishnupur district, reportedly revealed information about additional drugs and weapons stored in Kwakta village.
The situation deteriorated when Assam Rifles personnel in plain clothes were escorting the suspect to the location. Local women conducting vehicle checks stopped the team, leading to what the minister described as a miscommunication.
“Suspicions arose that members of a particular community were inside the vehicle, leading to confusion and tension among the public,” Singh explained. “The misunderstanding quickly escalated, triggering violence.”
As tensions flared, a mob attacked the security team, resulting in multiple injuries. In the ensuing chaos, security vehicles were set ablaze, further intensifying the unrest in an area already experiencing ethnic tensions.
Security forces, including Assam Rifles and Manipur Rifles commandos, rushed to conduct rescue operations. Local volunteers and community groups also assisted in bringing the situation under temporary control.
The minister revealed that Tuesday’s incident reportedly involved armed cadres, raising serious concerns about the deteriorating security landscape in the region. State security forces, central forces, and Army personnel have been deployed to restore order and prevent further disturbances.
“Combing operations are currently underway to restore order,” Singh stated. “Authorities are working to identify those responsible and ensure swift action is taken against them.”
The incident comes amid ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur that erupted in May 2023 between the valley-dominant Meitei community and the tribal Kuki-Zo groups. The conflict has claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands, with sporadic violence continuing despite heavy security presence.
Regional security experts note that drug trafficking remains a persistent challenge in India’s northeastern states, which share porous borders with Myanmar, a major source of narcotics. The Manipur government has frequently highlighted the connection between drug trafficking and communal tensions in the state.
Singh said that authorities have informed the Members of the Legislative Assembly representing Moirang and Kumbi constituencies about the incident, and necessary measures are being implemented. A meeting with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh is also being planned to address the situation comprehensively.
As the state government works to contain the situation, the Home Minister’s appeal for calm reflects growing concerns about how misinformation, particularly when spread through social media, can rapidly inflame tensions in an already volatile environment.
