Journalists Embrace AI Tools to Combat Misinformation at DRU Workshop

In an era where digital technology is rapidly transforming journalism, the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) has taken a significant step toward equipping its members with essential artificial intelligence skills. A comprehensive workshop recently brought together approximately 500 journalists who received hands-on training in cutting-edge AI applications designed to enhance their reporting capabilities.

“In this technology-driven era, verifying the accuracy of information has become a greater challenge than gathering it,” said Shofiqul Islam Khan Milton, addressing the assembled journalists. “Journalists must transcend traditional reporting and become skilled fact-checkers. Only through responsible journalism can we thwart misinformation and deliver authentic news to the people.”

The event, presided over by DRU President Abu Saleh Akon, featured extensive discussions about AI’s dual nature in modern journalism. Speakers acknowledged that while artificial intelligence technologies can potentially be weaponized for propaganda purposes, their ethical and constructive application offers tremendous potential to strengthen journalistic practices and create more meaningful impact.

DRU General Secretary Mynul Hasan Sohel emphasized that adopting these technologies is no longer optional for media professionals. “AI is no longer just an optional technology; it is an essential tool for increasing speed, accuracy, and analytical depth. To keep pace with the times, achieving this technological excellence is mandatory,” he noted.

The workshop, organized in partnership with XYZ Cloud Bangladesh and Gamplify, delivered practical training across several crucial areas. Participants received instruction in utilizing modern AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Studio, and NotebookLM. They also learned advanced fact-checking techniques specifically designed to identify deepfakes and manipulated media—a growing concern in Bangladesh’s information ecosystem.

Data journalism formed another key component of the training, with journalists practicing methods to analyze large datasets quickly to extract newsworthy insights. Additionally, participants discovered techniques for efficiently processing lengthy audio recordings, videos, and PDF documents to streamline script writing and report generation.

Mahfuzur Rahman, Managing Director of Gamplify, led demonstrations showing how AI applications can dramatically reduce time spent on labor-intensive tasks like research, translation, and headline generation from complex information sources. Throughout the workshop, journalists gained practical experience applying these tools to investigative reporting scenarios and digital storytelling projects.

The initiative comes at a critical moment for Bangladesh’s media industry, which faces mounting challenges from misinformation spread through social media channels and the increasing sophistication of digitally manipulated content. By embracing AI tools while maintaining journalistic principles, reporters aim to strengthen their ability to deliver accurate, timely information to the public.

Media technology experts present at the event noted that Bangladesh’s journalism sector has sometimes lagged behind global counterparts in adopting digital tools, but this training represents a significant step toward closing that gap. The DRU workshop model could potentially serve as a template for similar initiatives across South Asia’s journalism communities.

The ceremony was attended by members of the DRU Executive Committee, several prominent journalists from major Bangladeshi news outlets, and technology experts specializing in media applications. Industry observers have characterized this program as a milestone in the technological transformation of Bangladesh’s media landscape.

As newsrooms worldwide navigate the integration of artificial intelligence into their workflows, this training initiative highlights the growing recognition that technological literacy has become as essential to journalism as traditional reporting skills.
