In response to growing misconceptions about agricultural practices, CropLife America has launched a new initiative called “Farmer Voices Matter” aimed at combating misinformation in the agricultural sector and highlighting the importance of crop protection tools.

Alexandra Dunn, President and CEO of CropLife America, explained that the initiative emerged partly in response to claims made by the Make America Healthy Again Movement earlier this year. “Pesticides aren’t used recklessly. They are heavily regulated. They help protect food affordability and abundance. These are all facts that we wanted to share,” Dunn said during an interview at the 2023 National Association of Farm Broadcasting (NAFB) Convention.

The campaign seeks to correct public misperceptions about modern farming practices while emphasizing the essential role that crop protection products play in ensuring food security and agricultural sustainability. According to Dunn, many consumers remain unaware of the strict regulatory framework that governs pesticide use in the United States and the careful application protocols followed by farmers.

“There’s really some nice opportunities for some great stories to be told about agriculture,” Dunn noted, highlighting how the initiative plans to showcase farmers’ experiences and scientific evidence to counter misinformation. She pointed out that the second Make America Healthy Again report addressed soil health issues, providing an opportunity for agricultural stakeholders to demonstrate how U.S. companies are developing tools that help growers maintain soil quality while producing food efficiently.

The agricultural sector has faced increasing scrutiny in recent years from consumer groups concerned about the environmental and health impacts of conventional farming practices. This scrutiny has sometimes led to calls for restrictions on various agricultural inputs without full consideration of their benefits or the rigorous safety testing they undergo before market approval.

Industry experts suggest that the gap between consumer perceptions and agricultural realities has widened as fewer Americans have direct connections to farming communities. This disconnect has created an environment where misinformation can spread rapidly, particularly through social media channels where scientific nuance is often lost.

Dunn emphasized that developing a clear policy framework will be essential to protect farmers’ access to necessary crop protection tools in the future. This framework would need to balance legitimate environmental and health considerations with the practical requirements of efficient food production.

The Farmer Voices Matter campaign represents part of a broader industry effort to engage more directly with consumers and policymakers about the realities of modern agriculture. By amplifying authentic farmer experiences and providing science-based information about agricultural practices, CropLife America hopes to foster more informed public discourse around food production.

Agricultural economists note that restrictions on crop protection tools without suitable alternatives could potentially impact food prices and availability, particularly for lower-income consumers who spend a higher percentage of their income on food. This economic dimension adds another layer to the complex discussions about agricultural practices and policies.

CropLife America, as the national trade association representing manufacturers, formulators, and distributors of crop protection products, has consistently advocated for science-based regulation and education about agricultural technologies. The organization works with regulatory agencies, researchers, and farmers to promote responsible use of agricultural inputs.

As the Farmer Voices Matter initiative moves forward, it aims to create dialogue between farmers, consumers, and policymakers about the balance between environmental stewardship and productive agriculture—a conversation that will shape the future of food production in America.
