Jacksonville Police Dispel Social Media Rumors of Serial Killer After Multiple Deaths
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has firmly rejected widespread social media rumors suggesting a serial killer is operating in the city, following the discovery of four bodies over a weekend that sparked community concern and online speculation.
The series of deaths began on Saturday afternoon when officers discovered the body of a man estimated to be in his 20s or 30s alongside a road. Within hours, investigators found a deceased woman in a Mandarin area parking lot near a fitness center. The following day, a third body—another woman—was discovered under a bridge after a passerby alerted officers. By Sunday night, authorities located a fourth body, also female, inside a residence in the Phoenix neighborhood.
The rapid succession of body discoveries, combined with limited public information from law enforcement, created a perfect environment for speculation to flourish on social media platforms. Unsubstantiated claims about a serial killer targeting Jacksonville residents quickly gained traction online, prompting the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) to issue an official statement.
“JSO is aware of rumors circulating about a serial killer on the loose in Jacksonville. We can confirm these claims are FALSE,” the statement read. “Our detectives are investigating recent homicide cases that involve female victims, following the facts and evidence in each case. We will share updates as soon as we are able to, but we want to reassure the community there is no danger to the public related to these incidents.”
Tom Hackney, News4JAX Crime and Safety Analyst who previously served over 25 years with the sheriff’s office, provided insight into how law enforcement approaches multiple death investigations and why some cases require more time before details can be released.
“Much of it depends on the medical examiner’s office,” Hackney explained. “If there’s a knife sticking out of somebody’s chest, it’s fairly obvious that this is a homicide, a murder.” However, many cases require thorough forensic examination and toxicology reports before manner of death can be confirmed.
Hackney also highlighted the challenges law enforcement faces when confronting rapidly spreading misinformation. “When these rumors start, you have to take a step back from inside law enforcement and say, ‘Probably we need to share some information to clarify this,'” he noted.
The situation in Jacksonville reflects a growing nationwide issue where social media can amplify unverified claims during active investigations.
