Warwick District Council has suspended all activity on the social media platform X, citing growing concerns about controversial content and misinformation spreading on the site. The decision was unanimously approved by the council’s cabinet on Thursday and took immediate effect.

The council, which had amassed approximately 12,000 followers on the platform formerly known as Twitter, has now pinned a post directing users to alternative communication channels. The decision places Warwick among a growing number of local authorities in the UK that have abandoned X in recent months.

“Councillors have become increasingly concerned about the nature of the controversial content shared on the platform and its use in spreading misinformation and inciting action,” explained Rebecca Davidson, the council’s cabinet member for people and organisational development. Davidson emphasized that the timing was right for the council to “disassociate itself from X” and remove its presence from the platform.

The motion passed by the cabinet formally requests that the council sever ties with X completely. In addition, council officials plan to contact local Members of Parliament, urging the national government to follow their example and reconsider its use of the platform for official communications.

Warwick District Council is not pioneering this movement. Davidson noted that neighboring local authorities in Solihull and Rugby have already abandoned X, suggesting a regional trend among West Midlands councils stepping away from the platform.

This exodus of public sector organizations from X comes amid broader concerns about content moderation on the platform since its acquisition by Elon Musk in late 2022. Under Musk’s leadership, the platform has made significant changes to its content policies and reduced moderation staff, leading to criticisms that harmful content, misinformation, and extremist views now circulate more freely.

Public sector communications experts have noted that local governments are particularly sensitive to being associated with platforms that may contain divisive or misleading content, as they need to maintain trust with residents across political and social divides.

The council has assured residents that the move will not impact its ability to communicate effectively with the public. Davidson emphasized that the authority maintains “a strong following across other social media platforms” and will continue to use these channels to keep residents informed about local services, events, and initiatives.

Looking forward, Warwick District Council is exploring alternative communication methods to ensure it reaches residents through various channels. “The marketing and communications team is already investigating new opportunities, such as WhatsApp groups, text messaging and our own App, to continue to improve our communications,” Davidson added.

The shift represents part of a broader evolution in how local governments are approaching digital communication strategies. Many authorities are diversifying their outreach methods beyond traditional social media platforms, developing more direct channels they can control without dependency on commercial platforms and their changing policies.

X, which has faced numerous controversies regarding content moderation since Musk’s takeover, has not yet responded to requests for comment on Warwick District Council’s decision or the wider trend of public authorities leaving the platform.

As digital communication continues to evolve, this move highlights the growing tensions between public institutions’ need for reliable, responsible communication channels and the changing landscape of social media platforms.

Interesting decision by the council. Misinformation can be a serious issue, especially on social media platforms. It’s good to see local authorities taking proactive steps to address these concerns and protect their citizens.

Agreed. This move by the council seems prudent in light of the growing issues around misinformation on X platform. Removing their presence is a responsible decision.

  3. William Taylor on

The council’s decision to sever ties with X completely seems quite definitive. I wonder if there was consideration of maintaining a more limited presence to at least provide accurate information, or if the risks were deemed too high.

    • Isabella Martin on

That’s a fair question. Completely withdrawing may be the safest option if the council felt the misinformation risks outweighed any potential benefits of maintaining a presence on the platform.

  4. I’m curious to see how other local councils respond to this. Will more start to withdraw from X, or will they take different approaches to address misinformation concerns? It’s a complex issue without easy solutions.

    • That’s a good point. There may be various ways councils could handle this, from stricter content moderation to shifting focus to other platforms. It will be interesting to see the range of responses.

  5. It will be interesting to see if this decision has any ripple effects on the wider adoption and use of X platform, especially by other government and public sector entities. This could be a significant setback for the platform.

Absolutely. If more councils and public bodies follow suit, it could significantly undermine X’s legitimacy and user base, especially in the UK. A major challenge for the platform to overcome.
