Three years after her disappearance, police warn against misinformation in Madalina Cojocari case
The search for Madalina Cojocari continues three years after the 11-year-old girl vanished from her North Carolina neighborhood. Authorities in Cornelius are now addressing concerns about misinformation that they say could impede their ongoing investigation.
Madalina was last seen getting off her school bus on Victoria Bay Drive in Cornelius on November 21, 2022. The sixth-grader from Bailey Middle School would now be 14 years old, but her whereabouts remain unknown despite extensive search efforts by local and federal agencies.
On Tuesday, the Cornelius Police Department issued a statement on social media cautioning the public about false information circulating regarding the case. “Misinformation can distract from the work being done and can unintentionally hinder the progress of an active investigation,” the department wrote.
Deputy Chief Thompson and investigators emphasized that finding Madalina remains their top priority. “To keep our focus where it belongs, we ask everyone to rely on and share only verified information released directly by our department. When our community has the facts, we are stronger, more unified, and more effective in our search efforts.”
One of the most troubling aspects of the case is that Madalina wasn’t reported missing until December 2022 – nearly three weeks after she was last seen. Her mother, Diana Cojocari, and stepfather, Christopher Palmiter, were subsequently charged and convicted of failure to report her disappearance. Authorities became involved only after school officials demanded that Diana bring Madalina to school.
In their recent statement, Cornelius Police outlined several facts about the investigation, addressing some apparent misconceptions. The department confirmed that the FBI, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and local officials have conducted extensive searches, including canvassing nearly 300 homes, many of which were searched with residents’ permission.
The investigation has utilized numerous resources including water searches, K-9 units, multiple examinations of Madalina’s home and property, interviews with school staff and students, and reviews of surveillance footage from homes, businesses, and traffic cameras.
Police also addressed questions about Madalina’s mother, noting that Diana Cojocari is not a U.S. citizen and has legally returned to her home country of Moldova after serving her sentence. “Law enforcement did not ‘allow’ Diana to leave the country. She served her time for her charges and legally left to return to her home country,” the department clarified.
Despite the passing years, Cornelius Police Chief Baucom remains committed to solving the case. “It’ll never be a cold case as long as I work here, and as long as this agency is investigating it,” Baucom told WBTV in a recent interview. “Our goal from the start has been to find Madalina, and we’re not going to stop until we do.”
The disappearance has deeply affected the Cornelius community, a suburban town north of Charlotte with approximately 30,000 residents. Missing child cases of this duration present unique challenges for investigators, who must balance maintaining public interest with protecting the integrity of their investigation.
The case has drawn national attention and sparked ongoing questions about the circumstances surrounding Madalina’s disappearance, particularly given her mother’s delay in reporting her missing and the subsequent legal proceedings against both parents.
Authorities continue to ask for the public’s help. Anyone with information about Madalina’s whereabouts is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or the Cornelius Police Department at 704-892-7773.
As the third anniversary of her disappearance passes, investigators remain hopeful that new information will emerge to help them determine what happened to Madalina Cojocari and potentially bring her home safely.
