BJP spreading misinformation: Chaudhary
Samajwadi Party (SP) MLC Rajendra Chaudhary has vehemently rejected accusations from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that his party holds anti-women sentiments due to its opposition to amendments in the Nari Vandan Bill, 2023.
Speaking during Thursday’s special legislative session in Lucknow, Chaudhary clarified that the Nari Vandana Amendment Bill, which was defeated in Parliament, was not a reservation bill as claimed but actually a Delimitation Bill. His speech faced continuous interruptions from BJP members, highlighting the growing tension between the two major political forces in Uttar Pradesh.
“Samajwadi Party has been in favor of the Nari Vandana Act. We cast our vote for it,” Chaudhary emphasized, attempting to set the record straight on his party’s position. “In the Samajwadi movement, Draupadi is considered the ideal woman. Draupadi stood up against the injustice done to her.”
Chaudhary didn’t mince words when criticizing the BJP’s proposal, calling it “flawed” and asserting that it was not “constitutionally compliant.” He went further, suggesting that “the person who drafted this proposal has no knowledge of the Constitution,” a direct attack on the BJP’s legislative competence.
The SP leader accused the ruling party of deliberately spreading misinformation to the public. He pointed out that the proposal in the Parishad incorrectly stated that the Nari Vandana Bill 2023 was passed solely by the NDA government, whereas it was actually passed by Parliament with consensus among all parties.
“The Women’s Reservation Bill 2023 was passed collectively by all opposition parties,” Chaudhary clarified, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the original legislation. He added that SP’s commitment to gender equality has deep roots in the party’s ideology, extending from the philosophy of Dr. Rammanohar Lohia to the current leadership of SP national president Akhilesh Yadav.
This exchange comes at a critical time in Uttar Pradesh politics, where women’s issues have increasingly become a battleground between parties vying for electoral advantage. The BJP has been aggressively positioning itself as a champion of women’s rights, while opposition parties like SP have accused it of merely paying lip service to gender equality without substantive action.
Women’s representation in Indian politics has been a contentious issue for decades. The Women’s Reservation Bill, which seeks to reserve one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women, has had a troubled history of stops and starts since it was first introduced in 1996.
Political analysts note that while the original Nari Vandana Bill received cross-party support, disagreements over implementation mechanisms and delimitation aspects have created fresh political divides. The SP’s objection appears specifically focused on how the bill’s amendments could potentially affect constituency boundaries, which carries significant electoral implications.
The controversy also highlights the complex interplay between genuine policy disagreements and political messaging. While the BJP has sought to paint opposition to its amendments as anti-women, SP leaders like Chaudhary are attempting to reframe the debate around constitutional propriety and accurate representation of facts.
As elections approach in India’s most populous state, this debate is likely to intensify, with both parties attempting to court female voters who represent a crucial and increasingly assertive electoral demographic. The outcome of this political tussle could significantly impact women’s representation in governance and policy-making in the years to come.

Agreed. This issue could have significant implications, so it’s crucial that the debate moves beyond partisan rhetoric and focuses on the substance and merits of the proposed legislation.
The BJP and SP appear to have sharply divergent views on this issue. Chaudhary’s strong criticism of the BJP’s proposal as being flawed and unconstitutional is quite a serious allegation. It suggests there may be legitimate concerns about the bill that need to be addressed.
Chaudhary’s invocation of the Draupadi story is an intriguing framing. It seems he is trying to cast the SP as champions of women’s rights and justice. This could be a strategic move in the political battles ahead.
