Australian Actor Guy Pearce Withdraws from Social Media After Controversial Israel Comments

Oscar-nominated Australian actor Guy Pearce has announced his withdrawal from social media platforms following his admission of sharing “misinformation and falsehoods” about Israel. The 58-year-old star of “The Brutalist” issued a formal apology after posting controversial content that contained antisemitic conspiracy theories.

In recent months, Pearce had been vocal in his support for Palestine on his X (formerly Twitter) account, where he shared a series of posts containing unsubstantiated claims. These included allegations that “the top three pornography companies are owned by Jewish people” and suggestions that Jewish people were responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

“It has been brought to my attention that, in my support of Palestine, I have inadvertently re-posted articles, and/or statements, that have contained misinformation and falsehoods,” Pearce told Jewish News in a statement. “I am aware how sharing inaccurate content can cause confusion and distress; for this I am deeply sorry. I will certainly endeavour to be more diligent in future to verify anything I share online.”

The actor’s now-deleted social media content also included reposts of rhetoric from American white nationalist Nick Fuentes and false claims suggesting that conservative commentator Charlie Kirk had died after rejecting money from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to support Israel.

In one particularly pointed November 21 post, Pearce wrote: “I’ve never been so disgusted by a group of people in my life as I am by Israelis. Everyday I witness their utter disregard & disdain for Palestinian life. It is shameful & sets humanity further backwards with every vile act like this.”

The actor also shared content from an Instagram account claiming to focus on fitness and nutrition that alleged Jewish Zionists control major gambling institutions and prostitution. One reposted message stated: “Remember, when Zionists tell you Islam will destroy America… The top three pornography companies are owned by Jewish people. The top one being owned by a Rabbi.”

After removing the controversial content from his social media accounts, Pearce announced his decision to step back from online platforms entirely.

“Earlier this week, I issued an apology for sharing misleading and inaccurate posts and commentary on social media,” he stated. “I meant every word of that apology but I recognise that meaningful action must accompany any apology. To prevent any further hurt, confusion or damage to others, I will be stepping back from social media for the time being.”

Pearce’s statements have drawn significant attention within the entertainment industry, where celebrities’ political comments on the Israel-Palestine conflict have frequently sparked controversy. The incident highlights the broader issue of misinformation on social media platforms and the responsibility public figures have when sharing content with large audiences.

The actor has enjoyed a successful career spanning decades, beginning with his breakout role on Australian soap opera “Neighbours” in the late 1980s before transitioning to international acclaim in films like “Memento,” “L.A. Confidential,” and “The King’s Speech.” His recent controversy marks a rare public relations challenge for the typically well-regarded performer.

Before his social media retreat, Pearce had made his political stance visible at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards in February, where he wore a white brooch featuring the words “Free Palestine.” However, his recent online posts crossed into territory that he now acknowledges contained harmful falsehoods.

The incident comes amid ongoing global tensions surrounding the Israel-Gaza conflict, which has polarized public opinion and led to heated debates across social media platforms.
