In what has been described as the wildest college football coaching cycle in memory, Auburn Athletic Director John Cohen conducted a thorough yet remarkably discreet search for the Tigers’ new head coach, ultimately landing on Alex Golesh while much of the media spotlight focused elsewhere.

While speculation swirled around the high-profile Lane Kiffin saga, Auburn operated largely beneath the radar, avoiding the sensational headlines that dominated coverage of other SEC coaching searches. Cohen, speaking Wednesday on Mobile’s “The Opening Kickoff” radio show on WNSP-FM 105.5, offered rare insight into his methodical approach.

“Sometimes you talk about others to deflect or create a smokescreen for the folks you really want,” Cohen explained. “It was really important to Alex and us to keep this as quiet as possible.”

Contrary to widespread rumors, Cohen revealed that the Iron Bowl outcome against Alabama had no bearing on Auburn’s coaching decision. “In fact, we had numbers in front of Alex and his agent prior to the game,” he noted, dispelling speculation that the search timeline was tied to on-field results.

Cohen expressed particular admiration for Golesh’s offensive prowess and proven track record of program transformation. “I’ve been a big fan of Alex’s ever since he was at Central Florida as the offensive coordinator,” Cohen said. “And then, of course, what happens at our level is, ‘Hey, you do it at Central Florida, can you do it in the SEC at Tennessee?’ And the answer to that question was resoundingly yes.”

Golesh’s accomplishments as South Florida’s head coach further solidified his candidacy. “He took over a 1-11 football team and won seven games,” Cohen pointed out. “Next year, he took over a football team that had won four total games in three years. He won 23 games in the following three years.”

The Auburn AD also addressed the rampant misinformation that typically surrounds high-profile coaching searches. With a touch of humor, Cohen recounted conversations with his children during Thanksgiving: “My kids say, ‘Dad, you’re in New Orleans right now. Hey, dad, you’re in Phoenix, Arizona right now’… while I’m sitting in our living room.”

He acknowledged the entertainment value of coaching carousel coverage while questioning its accuracy. “I think it gets comical almost at some point. But because of the popularity of college football, it’s going to create a subset of industries,” Cohen said. “I do question the accuracy of it because there is a ton of misinformation out there.”

When asked about Jon Sumrall, who ultimately landed at Florida after the Gators moved on from Kiffin, Cohen revealed his flexible approach to the search. “We never really gave up on any of the core group of people we were interested in. Yeah, we really didn’t give up on anybody because things are always evolving. They’re always changing.”

The interconnected nature of SEC coaching searches created a domino effect across the conference. While Kiffin’s dramatic move to LSU dominated headlines and Florida pivoted to Sumrall, Auburn quietly secured Golesh—a development Cohen believes ideally suited the program’s needs.

“We ended up with the right guy. This is the guy we wanted,” Cohen emphasized. “I believe this is a guy who is innovative, he’s passionate, and guys, let’s be honest, he has had elite offensive success in the Southeastern Conference.”

Cohen’s methodical approach appears to have paid dividends in landing a coach whose offensive credentials and program-building experience align with Auburn’s ambitions. While lacking the headline-grabbing drama of other SEC coaching changes, the Tigers’ understated process may prove equally consequential for the program’s future trajectory in college football’s most competitive conference.
