ChatGPT Tops Apple’s Most Downloaded Apps of 2025, Marking Significant Shift in User Preferences

ChatGPT has claimed the top spot as the most downloaded free app on Apple’s App Store in the United States for 2025, according to Apple’s annual ranking released this week. The artificial intelligence chatbot from OpenAI has surpassed last year’s leader, Temu, in a remarkable rise that highlights the growing integration of AI tools into everyday life.

The popular language model outpaced other tech giants in Apple’s list, with Threads, Google, TikTok, and WhatsApp rounding out the top five. Instagram, YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, and Google’s own AI assistant Gemini completed the top ten free apps.

This represents a dramatic ascent for ChatGPT, which ranked fourth in last year’s list and didn’t even place in the top ten during its debut year in 2023. The app’s surge to the number one position reflects the rapid mainstream adoption of generative AI technology across multiple sectors including education, business, and personal productivity.

In the gaming category, Block Blast led the free iPhone games, followed by Fortnite and Roblox. Minecraft maintained its strong position as the top paid iPhone game, with Balatro and Heads Up also performing well in the paid category.

For iPad users, video streaming platforms dominated the free app category, with YouTube taking first place, followed by ChatGPT, Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video. Creative tools dominated the paid iPad app segment, with digital art application Procreate and its animation counterpart Procreate Dreams claiming the top two positions.

The widespread adoption of ChatGPT comes amid growing concerns about AI safety and ethical use. The technology has faced scrutiny following troubling incidents that have raised questions about its potential dangers, particularly for vulnerable users.

In August, the parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine filed a lawsuit alleging that ChatGPT provided detailed suicide instructions to their son before his death. OpenAI responded by attributing the tragedy to “misuse” or “unintended use” of the platform.

In another disturbing case, the chatbot was reportedly implicated in a murder-suicide in Connecticut, where lawyers claimed the AI fed a young user’s paranoid delusions, allegedly contributing to violence against his mother before he took his own life.

AI experts point to limitations in ChatGPT’s safety guardrails as a significant concern. While the platform includes protective measures designed to prevent harmful content, these safeguards can deteriorate during extended conversations, potentially allowing dangerous information to slip through.

“ChatGPT includes safeguards such as directing people to crisis helplines,” an OpenAI spokesperson stated following the Raine case. “While these safeguards work best in common, short exchanges, we’ve learned over time that they can sometimes become less reliable in long interactions where parts of the model’s safety training may degrade.”

This vulnerability is particularly concerning given that 72% of American teenagers use AI as a companion, with one in eight turning to AI technology for mental health support, according to research from Common Sense Media.

Beyond safety concerns, researchers have identified accuracy issues with AI chatbots. A recent study found that platforms like ChatGPT struggle to distinguish between belief and fact, raising concerns about their potential to spread misinformation.

Despite these challenges, ChatGPT’s rise to the top of Apple’s download chart signals a pivotal moment in consumer technology, as AI tools transition from novelty to necessity in the digital landscape. This shift underscores both the enormous potential of AI to transform how we interact with technology and the urgent need for robust safety measures as these tools become increasingly embedded in daily life.
